Description

A tool bag fails in one of two ways. The fabric gives at the base where the weight sits, or the layout forces you to empty the whole bag to reach the one screwdriver you need. The Field Kit addresses both: 1680 denier Oxford cloth, which is the heaviest common weave used in bags and roughly double the abrasion resistance of the 600D used on generic tool totes, and a multi-pocket interior that opens wide so the bag works as a tray rather than a sack.

The 1680D figure is worth understanding rather than skipping past. Denier measures the weight of the yarn in the weave, and the higher the number the denser and tougher the fabric. A 1680D Oxford bag resists the abrasion that a bag full of metal tools does to its own lining every time it is set down, and it holds its shape when loaded instead of sagging into a lump. That is why electricians, who carry weight all day, pay for the heavier cloth.

The sizes run from 13 inch to 22 inch in two construction tiers, classic and upgrade, which is really a choice about how the bag is carried and how the mouth opens rather than about capacity alone. The small bodies suit a domestic kit, a bike workshop or a diagnostic set; the 18 inch and 20 inch upgrade models are the ones an electrician or installer carries, sized to take a full set of hand tools plus meters and consumables without turning into a suitcase.

Practical details decide daily use: a wide opening that stays open while you work out of it, multiple external pockets for the things you want without digging, waterproof fabric that survives a wet floor, and an anti-fall construction that keeps a loaded bag upright when it is set down. Blue and black are the two colours, and the honest recommendation is to size up if you are between options, because a bag that is exactly full is a bag you will empty every time.

The best tool bag is the one you never think about while working.

Key Features

  • 1680D Oxford cloth The heaviest common bag weave, around double the abrasion resistance of 600D, which is what survives a bag full of metal.
  • Multi-pocket interior A layout that opens wide and holds tools upright, so the bag works as a tray instead of a sack.
  • Two construction tiers Classic and upgrade models across the size range, differing in structure, opening and carry detail.
  • 13 inch to 22 inch From a domestic kit to a full installer load, with sizes in between for bike, electrical and diagnostic sets.
  • Waterproof fabric Handles a wet workshop floor and a damp van without the contents going rusty.
  • Anti-fall build Keeps a loaded bag upright when set down, so tools do not spill out of the open mouth.
  • Multiple external pockets Fast access to meters, tape and drivers without emptying the main compartment.
  • Blue and black Two colours, both dark enough to hide workshop grime rather than advertise it.

Where It Belongs

It suits the electrician or installer who carries a meter, drivers, pliers and consumables to a different address every day, and the mechanic or bike workshop where tools live in a bag rather than on a wall. It also suits the domestic kit that has outgrown a plastic case: the 16 inch and 18 inch bodies hold a full household set with room to see what is missing. For anyone working out of a van, the waterproof fabric and structured base are the parts that decide whether the bag lasts two years or ten.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I choose between the sizes?

A: By the tools you actually carry, not by the maximum. A 14 to 16 inch bag covers a household or bike kit; 18 to 20 inch is the installer size once a meter, a drill and consumables are in the bag. If you are between two sizes, take the larger one.

Q: What is different in the upgrade models?

A: The upgrade tier changes the structure and the opening rather than the fabric: a more rigid body, a wider mouth that stays open, and better carry detail. For daily professional use, the upgrade tier is the one worth paying for.

Q: Is it really waterproof?

A: The fabric is waterproof, and the seams are stitched rather than welded, so it survives a wet floor and rain but is not designed to be submerged. For a van that leaks, put the bag on a shelf rather than the floor.

Q: Will it hold a cordless drill?

A: The 18 inch and larger bodies take a compact cordless drill plus batteries. The 13 and 14 inch bags are for hand tools and meters, and a drill will not fit with the mouth closed.

Q: Can the bag be carried on a shoulder strap?

A: The classic models are handle-carry. Check the specific size listing for strap provision, since the upgrade tier and the larger bodies vary, and a loaded 20 inch bag is heavy enough that a strap matters.

Q: How does 1680D compare with the 600D bags at half the price?

A: It is roughly twice the yarn weight, which shows in abrasion resistance and in how the bag holds shape when loaded. A 600D bag is fine for occasional domestic use and will fray at the base within a couple of years of professional carry.

Q: Does the bag stand up when empty?

A: The structured base keeps it upright when loaded. Empty, the lighter sizes will flop, which is normal for fabric bags and is why the anti-fall base matters most once tools are in.

Survived a wet van floor

Set it down in a puddle in the back of the van and the tools inside stayed dry. The base is structured so it does not absorb water the way fabric totes do. Two months of daily electrical work and no fraying at the corners.

Size up, and prefer the upgrade tier

I bought the 18 inch classic and then the 20 inch upgrade for work. The upgrade body opens wider and stays open while you work out of it, which matters daily. The classic is fine for occasional use at home.

Holds shape loaded with tools

The 1680D cloth is noticeably stiffer than the 600D bag I replaced, and it stands up when loaded rather than collapsing. Multiple external pockets take a meter and a set of drivers without digging through the main compartment.
