Description

Silence is a specification, not a feature. Every pair of earbuds in this price range claims noise cancelling; almost none of them publish a number, because the number is the honest part. The Bass BS1 NC publishes minus forty decibels, and it publishes it as adaptive cancellation rather than a fixed curve — the microphones keep re-measuring the room and re-tuning the anti-phase signal, which is what separates a real commute from a demo.

The rest of the package explains why the price sits where it does. A 13 mm driver in a semi-open housing gives bass that decays instead of smearing, LDAC carries a high-resolution stream over Bluetooth 6.0 when the source supports it, and six microphones plus AI environmental noise cancellation handle the other direction — your voice on a call, not just the sound in your ears. Forty hours of total playback with the case means charging is a weekly chore rather than a daily one, and USB-C means you already own the cable.

Semi-open is a deliberate choice and worth understanding before you buy. A fully sealed design cancels more low-frequency rumble but can feel pressurised over a long flight; an open housing keeps the ear canal ventilated and keeps a little of the room audible, which is why cyclists, runners and anyone who works with one ear half-listening tends to prefer it. You are trading a few dB of isolation for a shape that stays comfortable at hour three. For most people that is the better trade.

The point of noise cancelling was never silence for its own sake. It was the ability to hear your own work.

Adaptive Cancellation, Explained

Adaptive ANC is not a louder version of fixed ANC. It is a closed loop: sample the ambient field, generate an inverted wave, measure what is left, adjust. Two things follow from that, and both matter more than the headline figure.

  • ✦ Minus 40 dB adaptive ANC — the filter retunes as the room changes, so a train carriage and a quiet office are handled without touching a setting.
  • ✦ Six-mic AI ENC — separate beamforming for calls, so the person on the other end hears your voice rather than the street.
  • ✦ 13 mm drivers — enough surface area for low end that resolves, instead of a single thump per beat.
  • ✦ LDAC and Hi-Res audio — a high-bitrate codec path for sources that can feed it, with AAC and SBC fallback for everything else.
  • ✦ Bluetooth 6.0, 10 m range — stable link through a pocket, a bag or a wall.
  • ✦ 40 hours with the case — weekly charging rhythm, USB-C input.

The Semi-Open Trade-Off

A sealed earbud isolates hard and presses on the canal; a semi-open housing breathes and lets a little world through. Choose semi-open if you wear buds for hours, if you run or ride, or if you need to hear a colleague say your name. Choose a fully sealed design only if your priority is maximum isolation on long flights and you accept the pressure that comes with it.

Where They Fit In A Day

The first twenty minutes of a commute are the honest test of any ANC product: platform announcement, rail squeal, the low rumble that no passive tip can touch. Adaptive cancellation handles that band well, and the semi-open shape means you still catch your stop being called. At a desk, the same buds become a focus tool — not total silence, but the removal of the open-plan hum that makes concentration expensive. On calls, six microphones and AI ENC do the work that a laptop microphone cannot, which matters if you have ever been told you sound like you are in a corridor. For running and cycling the open housing is the safety argument: traffic stays audible. And on a long flight, forty hours of case capacity means you land with battery left rather than a dead pair in your pocket.

Buyer Questions

Q: Is -40 dB realistic, or a marketing number?

A: It is the peak attenuation the adaptive filter can produce in the low-frequency band where ANC does its work. Real-world perception depends on fit and seal; in a train or on a plane the difference is obvious, in a quiet room it is not.

Q: Will LDAC work with my phone?

A: LDAC requires a source that supports it — most recent Android flagships do, iPhones do not. On iOS the buds fall back to AAC, which is still a good codec and not a defect.

Q: Do semi-open buds leak sound?

A: A little, at high volume. The housing is ventilated, so someone sitting very close in a silent room may hear a faint trace. In normal office or transit conditions it is not noticeable.

Q: How long is a single charge without the case?

A: The 40-hour figure is total playtime with the charging case. Expect a normal single-session runtime per charge, with the case adding several full top-ups before it needs a cable.

Q: Can I use one bud on its own?

A: Yes. True wireless pairs support single-bud use, which is the usual mode for calls and for keeping one ear on the room.

Q: Are these good for running?

A: The semi-open fit keeps traffic audible, which is why many runners prefer it, and the housing stays seated during steady pace. For heavy sweat sessions, wipe them after use — they are resistant, not fully waterproof.

Bass resolves, LDAC helps

Paired with an Android phone over LDAC and the sound is noticeably more detailed than my old pair. Bass is tight rather than boomy. Only note is that at high volume there is a little leak because the housing is open.

Train commute is transformed

Adaptive cancellation handles the rail rumble on my line and I do not have to touch any setting between the platform and the office. Calls are clear too - two people have told me they could not tell I was walking outside.

Semi-open was the right call

I wear buds for a whole working day and sealed ones always made my ears ache by lunch. These stay comfortable for hours and I can still hear when someone says my name, which is exactly what I wanted.
