The strongest force in the river is the one you bring with you.

A retrieval magnet is judged on a single afternoon: whether it comes back with what fell. The Deep Grip answers that question with volume rather than compromise. A 60 mm diameter, 10 mm thick rare-earth pot magnet carries a single attracting face rated at 120 kg of vertical pull against a 30 mm steel plate, coupled to a 10 metre rope rated for the load, so the reach is as serious as the grip.

The magnet is formed from N-series neodymium with no dysprosium or terbium added, which keeps the compound predictable and the cost sane. A machined hole through the body provides a positive attachment point, so the rope is threaded through steel rather than tied around a hopeful eyelet. The pot casing concentrates flux into one working face, which is why the same block that behaves almost inertly on the bench becomes immovable against a steel rail.

It is a tool with two distinct lives. In the field it is a recovery instrument for dropped knives, keys, brackets and tackle, and on a riverbank it turns a search into a sweep. In a workshop it is a lifting aid for plate, offcuts and steel stock that would otherwise be retrieved by hand. Both lives depend on the same discipline: keep the faces clean, keep steel away from the storage face, and never let a finger take the place of a steel plate between two magnets.

Gravity is a law. Retrieval is a discipline.

Why It Holds

  • ✦ Rare-earth neodymium pot magnet with a single concentrated attracting face
  • ✦ 60 mm diameter, 10 mm thick body rated at 120 kg vertical pull on 30 mm steel
  • ✦ Single-sided working surface rated at 150 kg on a full contact plate
  • ✦ Formed without dysprosium or terbium for a predictable, repeatable compound
  • ✦ 10 metre, 5 mm rope included and threaded through a machined body hole

Field and Workshop Uses

On a riverbank the Deep Grip does quieter work than it sounds: sweeping a channel for dropped tools, recovering a lost knife from silt, retrieving tackle from a bridge or a jetty. Along a trail it is what finds the keys that went over the railing. In a workshop it becomes a handling aid for steel plate, bar stock and offcuts that are awkward to reach under a bench. Farmers use a magnet of this class to sweep a yard for nails and lost hardware before machinery passes over it, and anyone assembling steel frames will find it a useful third hand. It is, at heart, a tool for the moment when something steel has gone where a hand cannot follow.

Handling and Care

Two magnets of this class should never be allowed to meet at speed, because the impact can crack the brittle rare-earth core and permanently reduce holding force. Keep the working face free of grit and rust; a single trapped particle lifts the magnet off the plate and costs a large share of the rated pull. Store the magnet with a keeper plate across the face, or on a steel surface, rather than loose in a bag where other ferrous tools will collect. Neodymium is powerful but not heat tolerant, so leave it out of a hot vehicle cabin or a workshop oven. Wipe the rope and inspect it after every recovery session, and retire it the moment the sheath shows a cut.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How much can this magnet actually lift?

The rating is 120 kg of vertical pull against a 30 mm steel plate, with the single attracting face rated near 150 kg on full contact. Real-world performance depends on the steel thickness, whether the surface is painted, and how flat the contact is. Against thin sheet steel the effective pull is much lower than the rated figure.

Q: Will it work on stainless steel or aluminium?

No. The magnet acts on ferromagnetic metals: mild steel, iron, and ferritic stainless. Austenitic stainless, aluminium, brass and copper are not attracted. If you need to retrieve something aluminium, you are recovering it by feel rather than by magnet.

Q: Is the 10 metre rope strong enough?

The included rope is 10 m by 5 mm and matched to the magnet class. It is a retrieval line for controlled pulling, not a lifting sling for people or overhead loads. Inspect it for cuts after each session and replace it rather than knotting a damaged section.

Q: Can I use it in water?

Yes, the pot magnet and its plating resist fresh water and it is routinely used for river and jetty recovery. Rinse and dry it after saltwater use, and clear grit from the working face so the holding force is not reduced by a trapped particle.

Q: Is it dangerous to handle?

It deserves respect. Fingers are easily pinched between the magnet and a steel plate, and two of these magnets will draw together hard enough to crack. Keep the face away from ferrous storage, keep it out of reach of children, and never place a hand between the magnet and a steel surface.

Q: Can the casing be branded?

Yes. The body accepts branding, which is why it is specified with that option. It is a common choice for tool resellers and for workshops that want their own name on a bench magnet that gets handled every day.

Powerful, and it needs careful handling

No complaint about the strength, it is everything the listing says. Just be careful, it snapped onto a steel bench edge faster than I expected and pinched my glove. Keep a keeper plate on it when it is stored.

Bought for fishing, using it in the workshop

Picked it up for river recovery and ended up using it more in the workshop, fishing steel offcuts out from under the bench. Holding force on 10 mm plate is exactly as advertised.

Pulled a lost knife out of the river

Swept a stretch of riverbank where I dropped a knife last month and it came up on the third pass. The 10 metre rope gives real reach and the hole through the body means the line is not going to slip off.
