Description

An eighty litre pack is a commitment. It says the trip is long enough that resupply is not guaranteed, and it asks the bag to carry weight for hours without transferring that weight into your shoulders. Most backpacks this size answer with padding. This one answers with a frame.

The external aluminium alloy frame is the part that matters. It runs the load vertically into a hip belt rather than letting it hang off the trapezius, which is the difference between a pack you can wear for a full day and one you want to put down every hour. The body is nylon with a waterproof finish, and the whole unit weighs 1.45 kg before packing, light enough that the structure is paying for itself rather than adding to the problem.

At 35 x 28 x 80 cm the pack stands taller than most internal frame designs, which moves the centre of gravity up and back where the frame can manage it. Sixty litres of that sits in the main compartment with the balance in the lid and side pockets, so a sleeping bag, tent, stove and four days of food fit without strapping anything to the outside.

Unisex sizing, available in blue, black and green, with a rain cover included as a gift. For trekking, camping and travel where the bag gets carried rather than wheeled.

Eighty litres of gear is not heavy. Carrying it wrong is.

Where It Belongs

Thru hikers use an external frame pack when the load is heavy and the trail is long, because the frame keeps the weight off the shoulders across a full day of walking. Campers heading out for a long weekend with a family tent and cooking gear need the volume rather than the ultralight compromise. Travellers on multi-week trips in regions where a wheeled case is impractical use it as checked baggage that can also be carried on a trail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is this pack suitable for a beginner?

Yes, provided you learn to adjust the hip belt and shoulder straps properly. With an external frame, most of the weight should sit on the hips rather than the shoulders.

Q: How much weight can it carry?

It is designed for typical multi-day loads of 15 to 20 kg. Distribute the heaviest items closest to the frame and at mid back height.

Q: Does the 1.45 kg weight include the frame?

Yes. The figure is the complete pack structure without gear inside. The listing weight of 1.65 kg refers to the packed shipping weight.

Q: Is a rain cover included?

Yes, a rain cover is included as a gift. Keep it at the top of the pack so you can fit it without unpacking in the rain.

Q: Airline size limits?

At 80 cm tall this is a large pack and is usually treated as checked baggage. Confirm the dimensions with your carrier if you plan to bring it into the cabin.

Q: Which colour should I choose?

Choose by visibility rather than style. Green and black suit quiet trails, while the blue reads more clearly at distance which helps in a group.

Rain cover included was a bonus

The pack stayed dry inside through two hours of steady rain. Plenty of lash points for a tent on the outside.

Excellent capacity, tall on a small frame

I am 170 cm and this sits high. Once the torso straps are adjusted it carries well, but shorter walkers should check the sizing before committing.

Durable fabric, straps that hold

The nylon has taken abrasion from rock without fraying. Stitching around the shoulder anchors is heavy grade and shows no strain, which is where cheaper packs fail.

The frame does the work

Eighty litres is a lot of weight and the aluminium frame puts it on the hip belt instead of my shoulders. Carried four days of kit on a wet trail and the load sat steady.
