Description

A knit dress and a woven dress are solving different problems. Woven fabric holds a shape that was cut into it. Knit fabric holds a shape that the body gives it, which is why most knit dresses look generous on a hanger and honest on a person. The Seine Line works because the knit is ribbed and dense with slight stretch, so the fabric follows the body down to the knee and then releases into a fishtail hem that is cut, not stretched. The line does the shaping, and the knit simply agrees with it.

The mermaid silhouette depends entirely on where the release happens. Too high and it reads as a flared skirt; too low and it becomes a walking restriction. Here the seam sits below the knee at mid-calf length, with the hollow-out detailing worked into the knit above it so the eye travels down a texture change rather than a hard break. The button detail is functional to the construction, closing the back of the bodice without interrupting the rib line across the shoulder blades.

It is a cotton-blend knit with slight stretch, cut as an A-line with an O-neck, and it behaves the way a good knit should over a full day: it recovers at the elbow and the seat rather than bagging out, and it does not need pressing. Black and beige are stocked, both in S, M and L. Black reads formal enough for an evening, beige reads as a daytime dress with flat shoes, and the same block carries both, so the fit is consistent between colourways.

The knit follows the body. The cut decides where the body stops being followed.

What Makes It Different

  • ✦Ribbed knit with slight stretch that recovers at the elbow and seat rather than bagging
  • ✦Fishtail hem releasing below the knee, so the flare reads as silhouette rather than skirt
  • ✦Hollow-out knit detailing worked into the panel above the release seam
  • ✦Button closure at the back bodice, keeping the rib line unbroken across the shoulders
  • ✦A-line block with a mid-calf length that walks without restriction
  • ✦Cotton-blend knit that does not need pressing after a day of wear
  • ✦Black and beige stocked in S, M and L on one consistent block

Where It Earns Its Place

This is the dress that covers the middle of the week rather than the event at the end of it: a client lunch where a blazer over the top still works, a long train journey where a woven dress would crease into corduroy, a gallery opening, a dinner where you would rather not think about your outfit after the first hour. The fishtail hem gives it enough occasion for the evening, while the knit keeps it wearable for a daytime schedule, which is the combination most wardrobes are actually short of.

Questions Buyers Actually Ask

Q: Does the knit cling at the waist?

The rib is dense and the cut is A-line, so it follows the waist without pulling tight across it. The hollow-out detailing sits above the release seam where there is more give, which is why the silhouette stays smooth through the middle.

Q: How does the fishtail hem affect walking?

The release sits below the knee, so the flare starts where the leg has already cleared. Stairs need a hand on the hem, as with any mermaid cut, but normal walking is unrestricted.

Q: Is the knit warm enough for winter?

It is a mid-weight cotton blend, so it works in spring and autumn on its own and in winter under a coat with boots. It is not a summer-weight knit.

Q: How do I wash a knit dress without stretching it?

Hand wash cold or use a delicate cycle in a mesh bag, then dry flat and reshape while damp. Never hang a wet knit, because the weight of the water pulls the length out at the hem.

Q: Will it show underwear lines?

The rib is dense enough that a smooth seam-free option is sufficient. Very light colours can show a lace edge, so match tones rather than going for white under beige.

Q: What is the return window?

Thirty days from delivery on unworn items with tags attached. Knit returns must be unwashed, since a washed knit cannot be resold or reassessed for fit.

Sizing is close through the torso

Genuinely well made and opaque, no complaints there. It runs close through the middle by design, so if you are between sizes take the larger one. I took the medium and it fits but a large would be more comfortable at dinner.

The hem is the reason to buy it

A mermaid cut usually restricts your stride and this one does not because the release sits low. The hollow out detail above the seam gives the eye something to follow. Beige is a proper warm beige, not a yellow one.

Rib knit that does not bag out

The knit is dense enough that it still looks pressed after a full day of wear, which is not true of the softer knits I own. The fishtail releases below the knee so walking is normal. Black reads formal enough for a client dinner.
