Description

The Best Outdoor Lighting Is The Kind You Never Think About. Most garden lights ask for something. A trench, a transformer, an outdoor socket, a switch you have to remember at dusk. The Halo Lantern asks for daylight and nothing else. Hang it, walk away, and it becomes part of the evening architecture of the garden: on at dusk, off when the sun returns, season after season, without a cable crossing the patio or an electrician quoting for a spur off the ring main.

The form is deliberately old. A black skeletonised iron frame, a lantern silhouette, a bulb that glows like a filament rather than a diode strip. That choice is not nostalgia for its own sake. Lighting a garden with the same flat white as a supermarket aisle is how a patio ends up feeling like a car park. A warm tungsten-toned bulb behind metal ribs throws a soft, broken pattern across paving and planting that reads as depth rather than glare, and the pumpkin-shaped body gives a hanging cluster enough visual weight to register at twenty metres without becoming a focal point that fights the planting.

The engineering behind that glow is the part that decides whether the set is still working in two winters. An upgraded solar panel gathers more charge from the same footprint of dull northern daylight. A 3.7V 800 mAh Ni-MH cell holds that charge, giving up to fifteen hours of illumination from a six to eight hour charge, so a late summer dinner or a winter evening both stay lit past the point where cheaper lanterns have faded. The 5V LED array is tuned for brightness per milliamp rather than raw output, and the IP65 housing keeps rain, hose spray and sprinkler overspray on the outside where they belong. Automatic on at dusk, automatic off at dawn: the only maintenance in the average year is a wipe of the panel.

Good light does not announce itself. It simply makes the evening longer.

Key Features

  • ✦ Zero wiring: hangs from a hook, branch or bracket and charges from daylight alone, no socket and no transformer.
  • ✦ Up to 15 hours per charge: 800 mAh Ni-MH cell paired with an upgraded panel for illumination that outlasts the evening.
  • ✦ Filament-style LED: warm tungsten tone through a glass-effect diffuser, not the flat white of a standard solar stake.
  • ✦ IP65 weatherproof: sealed against rain and hose spray for permanent outdoor mounting.
  • ✦ Automatic dusk operation: built-in light sensor switches on at dusk and off at dawn with no timer to reset.
  • ✦ Skeletonised iron build: black powder-coated metal frame that holds its shape and finish outdoors.
  • ✦ Set of four: enough to line a path, dress a pergola, or cluster around a seating area in one pass.

Where It Earns Its Place

These are path and perimeter lights first. Four lanterns spaced along the edge of a walkway, or hung at intervals from a fence line, give a route enough definition to walk at night without flooding the garden with light that bleaches the planting. The second use is vertical: pergolas, gazebo corners, fence posts, the underside of a porch beam. Because there is no cable, a renter can hang them and take them down again, and a homeowner can light a seating area at the far end of a garden where running power was never worth the cost. The third is seasonal. These are the lights people put out for autumn evenings, for a garden gathering, for a wedding or a party in a courtyard that has no wiring and one evening to solve it. In winter, expect a shorter charge window and therefore shorter runtime; in midsummer with six hours of sun on the panel, expect them to still be glowing when the last guest leaves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do these need any wiring or batteries I have to buy?

A: No wiring at all, and the 3.7V 800 mAh Ni-MH cell is included and pre-fitted. The only input is daylight on the solar panel. There is no plug, no transformer and no mains connection anywhere in the set.

Q: How long do they actually stay lit?

A: Up to fifteen hours from a full charge, which in practice means a full evening and through much of the night in summer. Winter output is shorter because the panel receives fewer usable daylight hours. Position the panel facing the midday sun and clear of shade from foliage for the best runtime.

Q: Are they genuinely waterproof?

A: The housing is rated IP65, which covers rain, hose spray and normal outdoor exposure. That is not the same as submersion, so do not leave a lantern sitting in standing water or a full planter tray. A covered porch, a fence hook or a pergola beam is the intended mounting condition.

Q: Can I replace the battery when it eventually degrades?

A: The Ni-MH cell is a serviceable component inside the housing and can be swapped for a like-for-like cell once it stops holding capacity, which is typically after two to three seasons of daily cycling. Rechargeable Ni-MH cells lose capacity gradually rather than failing outright, so runtime shortens before the light stops entirely.

Q: Will the on-at-dusk sensor work under a porch roof?

A: The sensor and panel both need daylight to function. Under a deep roof, a lantern will charge poorly and may switch on early. Hang it where the panel sees open sky for at least part of the day, or accept a shorter runtime as the trade-off for the position.

Q: What colour is the light?

A: Warm white, in the tungsten range rather than cool daylight. Through the filament-style bulb and the iron ribs it reads as an amber glow on surrounding surfaces, which is why these suit seating and planting areas better than the blue-white output of most solar stakes.

Winter runtime is shorter, as expected

In summer they run most of the night. In December they fade by about nine, which is fair for solar and not a fault. Wiped the panels once and picked up noticeably more charge. Would buy again.

Warm light, not blue white

Most solar lights make the garden look like a car park. These are amber and the metal ribs break the light up so it lands on the planting instead of glaring. Two winters in and the finish has not rusted.

No wiring, no electrician, done in an hour

Hung all four along the path from the patio to the shed. No cable, no transformer, nothing to switch. They come on at dusk exactly as described and were still glowing at eleven at night in August.
