Description

The difference between a fall and a fall arrest is measured in centimetres. A self-retracting lifeline has one job: let the worker move, catch the body when the surface disappears, and stop it inside a distance short enough that the harness does not become the injury. The Anchor Line locks within eight inches, 0.2 metres, which is the number that matters when the anchor point sits at shoulder height rather than overhead.

Inside the housing is an aluminium alloy shell under a plastic casing, a split that matters in the field. The alloy carries the load path and the ratchet mechanism, while the plastic casing absorbs knocks against scaffolding, ladder rungs and truck beds without denting the mechanism inside. The connector is alloy steel with a self-locking gate, so the lifeline stays attached to the anchorage point even when the hook is bumped or dragged across a beam.

The rope is aviation-grade steel wire, multi-strand, chosen over webbing because wire does not hold grit, does not absorb oil, and does not weaken when a grinding spark lands on it. Dual swivels sit at both ends, which is the detail most budget units skip. Without them the lifeline twists under load, the hook rotates out of reach, and the worker spends the shift fighting the device instead of the job. With them, the line follows the body and the hook stays where you left it.

Rated capacity is 330 pounds, 150 kilograms, which covers a worker plus tools plus the dynamic load of an actual arrest. The locking mechanism is bidirectional: it pays out and retracts smoothly during normal movement, then brakes and locks the moment acceleration exceeds the threshold. That transition is the whole product. A lifeline that locks too eagerly snags on every step and gets clipped off in frustration. One that locks too late is not a lifeline.

Height does not forgive improvisation. The gear either catches you or it does not.

What you are actually buying

  • ✦ Locks within 8 inches (0.2 m) of free fall, keeping arrest distance short enough to protect the body.
  • ✦ Aluminium alloy inner shell carrying the load path, with a plastic outer casing that absorbs impact.
  • ✦ Aviation-grade multi-strand steel wire rope that resists grit, oil and grinding sparks.
  • ✦ Dual swivels at both ends, so the line does not twist and the hook stays reachable.
  • ✦ Alloy steel connector with a self-locking gate for a positive anchorage connection.
  • ✦ 330 lb (150 kg) rated capacity covering worker, tools and dynamic arrest load.

Where it belongs

Roof work, scaffold erection, steel erection, warehouse racking, wind turbine maintenance, truck bed loading, confined space entry and rescue drills. It suits anyone working at height where a fixed lanyard would be too long on the way up and too short at the anchor. Electricians use it on poles, millwrights use it on mezzanines, and maintenance crews use it on plant equipment where the fall hazard is a two-metre drop onto concrete. This is not a positioning device and it is not a rescue system; it is the last line between a slip and a hospital.

Questions buyers actually ask

Q: What does 330 lb capacity actually cover?

It covers the rated user plus tools plus the dynamic load generated during an arrest. If you weigh 250 lb and carry 60 lb of kit, you are inside the rating. If you are near the limit, use a device with a higher rating rather than assuming margin.

Q: How often should it be inspected?

Before every use, checking the wire for broken strands, the hook gate for positive closure and the retraction for smooth travel. A full documented inspection is annual, or immediately after any arrest, since the internal brake has done its job and the unit is no longer certified.

Q: Can it be used horizontally?

It is designed for vertical fall arrest from an overhead or shoulder-height anchor. Horizontal use creates a swing fall hazard and changes the load geometry, so it needs a specific engineered setup rather than a general purpose lifeline.

Q: Does the wire rope need lubrication?

No. Keep it dry, wipe off grit and store it retracted. Oil attracts dust into the retraction mechanism, which is the most common cause of a sluggish pay-out.

Q: Is one unit enough for a full shift of movement?

Yes. The retracting design pays out as you move and takes up slack behind you, which is the advantage over a fixed lanyard. Working radius depends on the unit length you select; the 0.2 m locking distance is independent of that length.

Q: What happens after it has caught a fall?

The unit is removed from service. The brake, the wire and the housing have all been loaded beyond normal working conditions, and no visual inspection can recertify them. Tag it, quarantine it, and replace it.

Solid, inspect it properly

Well made and the alloy housing takes knocks against scaffolding without denting. No instructions beyond basic use, so read up on anchor height and swing fall before you rely on it. Replaced after a test arrest as you should.

Dual swivels are the difference

Had a cheaper unit that twisted every time I turned around. This one follows the body because both ends swivel. Locking distance tested on a low anchor and it caught well inside the rated figure. Build feels industrial.

Locks fast, retracts smooth

Using it on warehouse racking and mezzanine work. Pay out is smooth, retraction is not snappy and does not yank, and the swivels keep the hook where I left it. Wire rope does not hold grit like the webbing lanyard it replaced.
