Description

The cheapest energy saving device in any cold room is a curtain. Every time a forklift passes a doorway, the room exhales. Strip curtains are not a decoration for the loading bay; they are a working barrier that lets the traffic through and keeps the temperature where the compressor put it. This kit is seven translucent PVC strips measuring 200 by 18 centimetres at 2 millimetres thick, hung from a single bracket to a total width of 1.05 metres.

The material is the whole argument. Environmental-grade PVC, waterproof and antistatic, soft enough to fold away from a shoulder without cracking and heavy enough to fall back into place after the truck has gone. It resists wind, water and scratches, holds its clarity so the bay stays visible from inside, and shrugs off temperature swings between minus 5 and 50 degrees Celsius without going brittle. There is no plastic smell, which sounds trivial until a curtain is hanging twelve inches from a worker's face for eight hours.

Installation is a bracket, a set of screws, and about twenty minutes. The strips hang individually, which means one damaged strip is a one-strip replacement rather than a whole-door purchase. Dust, noise and draughts all drop at the doorway, airflow stays normal, and the compressor cycle lengthens. For a small cold store, that is the entire return on investment.

A doorway is a hole in the envelope. A strip curtain is the cheapest way to close it without closing the business.

  • ✦ Seven 200 x 18 cm strips hung as a 1.05 m wide barrier
  • ✦ 2 mm environmental PVC, waterproof, antistatic and odourless
  • ✦ Minus 5 to 50 degrees Celsius working range without embrittlement
  • ✦ Translucent finish that keeps the doorway visible and safe
  • ✦ Individual strip replacement instead of full-door replacement
  • ✦ Complete kit with mounting bracket and fixing nails
  • ✦ Cuts noise, dust and draught while allowing normal airflow

Where It Belongs

Cold rooms, walk-in freezers and blast chillers are the obvious install, and the 1.05 metre coverage suits a personnel door rather than a full dock opening. Food production halls use it to separate a wash-down zone from dry storage without building a wall. Workshops hang it to keep dust out of a clean bay and to knock down grinder noise. Warehouses with a heated picking area and an unheated dispatch area use strips instead of an air curtain, because there is no electricity to run and nothing to service. Farms, car washes and commercial kitchens all use the same seven-strip kit for the same reason: it is the lowest-cost barrier that traffic can still pass through.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How wide a doorway does this cover?

A: The seven strips total 1.05 metres of coverage. That suits a standard personnel door. Wider openings need two kits mounted end to end on a continuous rail.

Q: Can it be cut to a shorter height?

A: Yes. PVC strip is cut cleanly with a straight edge and a sharp blade. Cut from the bottom so the hanging holes stay intact.

Q: Will it work on a freezer door at minus 18?

A: The material is rated to minus 5 for continuous use. For deep-freeze applications below that, a low-temperature strip formulation is the correct specification.

Q: Does it block visibility or light?

A: The strips are translucent, so light passes and the far side of the doorway stays visible. Safety signage is still recommended on the approach.

Q: What happens if a forklift damages one strip?

A: Each strip hangs independently on the bracket. Release the damaged strip and replace it alone, which is the practical reason to buy a strip kit rather than a welded curtain.

Q: How much does a strip curtain actually save on refrigeration?

A: The saving comes from the number of door cycles rather than from the material. A busy personnel door that opens forty times an hour loses a measurable volume of chilled air each time, and strips cut that exchange down to the gap between the strips. Most operators find the compressor runs fewer and shorter cycles within the first weeks.

Q: Can strips be hung on an existing rail or do I need this bracket?

A: The kit includes the bracket and fixings, so it hangs as supplied. If a rail is already installed and the hanging geometry matches, the strips can be transferred onto it, but check the hook spacing first because a mismatched pitch will leave the strips bunched at one end of the doorway.

Check your door width first

Seven strips cover about a metre, which suited my door but not the main dock opening. Ordered a second kit for that one. Strip replacement is the real advantage, one damaged slat is not a new curtain.

No plastic smell, which matters

I have fitted cheaper strips that stank for a week. These are odourless and the translucency keeps the doorway visible from inside. Two millimetres is stiff enough to hang straight.

Compressor cycles dropped noticeably

Hung this on the personnel door of a small cold store. The strips fall back into place after every pass and the bay no longer breathes cold air into the aisle. Twenty minutes with a drill and it was up.
