Description

There is a generation of footage that exists only on tape, in a box, in a cupboard. The Analog Bridge is the shortest path from that box to a file you can actually watch. It takes composite, S-Video and component input through a USB 2.0 interface and presents it to a computer as a standard video device, which means it works with the software people already own rather than requiring a proprietary suite that stops being updated.

The capture chip handles NTSC, PAL and SECAM, so tapes recorded in different regions play without a separate converter. Audio is captured through the same path, with level control in software. Because the device enumerates as a UVC-compliant camera, it works in OBS, QuickTime, VLC and most editing applications without drivers on Windows, macOS and Linux. That is the entire value proposition: no driver disc, no compatibility chart, no broken installer on a modern operating system.

The housing is a compact metal shell with strain relief at both the USB and the input end, which is where these devices fail. Inputs are labelled and the switch between composite and S-Video is mechanical rather than software-driven, so the setting survives a power cycle. It is small enough to sit behind a laptop and light enough to travel with if the tapes are at a relative's house.

A tape that has not been digitised is a tape that is already gone.

What Sets It Apart

  • ✦Captures composite, S-Video and component input over USB 2.0
  • ✦UVC-compliant, so it works without drivers on Windows, macOS and Linux
  • ✦Supports NTSC, PAL and SECAM playback for multi-region tapes
  • ✦Audio captured through the same path with software level control
  • ✦Mechanical input selector that survives power cycling
  • ✦Metal housing with strain relief at the USB and input ends
  • ✦Works directly in OBS, VLC, QuickTime and standard editing software

Where It Belongs

For anyone with a shelf of VHS, Hi8 or camcorder tapes and no way to play them back. It also suits retro console owners capturing gameplay from composite output, and small studios digitising archive footage on a budget. Because it presents as a standard camera, a single setup works for tape transfer in the morning and a console capture session in the evening without reinstalling anything.

Questions Buyers Ask

Q: Does it need drivers?

A: No. It enumerates as a standard UVC video device, which is why it works on current operating systems without the installer discs older capture hardware required.

Q: What quality should I expect?

A: Standard definition matching the source. VHS carries roughly 240 lines; the capture preserves that, it does not invent detail.

Q: Can I capture copy-protected tapes?

A: No. The unit does not strip copy protection and we do not support doing so. Tapes you recorded yourself are fine.

Q: Does it work with OBS?

A: Yes. It appears as a video capture device, so you can record or stream directly without additional software.

Q: Is there a delay in the preview?

A: There is a small buffering delay inherent to USB capture. For recording it is irrelevant; for live gaming on the preview it is noticeable.

Q: Does it capture audio from the tape?

A: Yes, audio comes through the same input path and is recorded alongside the video. Levels are set in your capture software.

Q: Can I capture from a camcorder directly?

A: Yes, if the camcorder outputs composite or S-Video. Cameras that only output HDMI need a separate HDMI-to-composite converter first.

Q: Does it work on a laptop with USB-C only?

A: With a USB-C to USB-A adapter, yes. The device is USB 2.0 and draws well within what an adapter supplies.

Q: What file format do I get?

A: Your capture software decides that. The device provides the video stream; OBS or QuickTime records it as the codec you select.

Standard definition only

It does exactly what it says, but do not expect it to improve the tape. VHS looks like VHS, which is the correct result. Audio came through with the video without a separate cable.

Enough for old consoles

Captured from a composite output at 480i and the delay on the preview was fine for recording. It shows up as a normal camera device so every program I already own can see it.

Twenty years of tapes, finally off tape

No drivers, no disc, worked on a current laptop in five minutes with OBS. The S-Video input is the reason I bought it and the picture is clean with no tearing.
