the-pocket-archive-retro-handheld-console
The Pocket Archive | RK3326 Retro Handheld with 3.5-Inch IPS Screen

The games that formed a generation are trapped on hardware that no longer exists. Cartridges rot, disc drives fail, and the console sitting in a box in the attic is one capacitor away from becoming a paperweight. The archive survives in the games themselves. What it needs is a body to live in.

The Pocket Archive is that body. A Rockchip RK3326 drives a 3.5 inch IPS panel at 640 by 480, which is the correct number: it is an integer multiple of the 320 by 240 resolution that most of these games were authored at, so pixels land where they were drawn instead of being smeared across an interpolated grid. A 3000 mAh cell sits behind the panel, the unit ships with a 64 GB card carrying more than 10,000 titles, and a second TF slot accepts up to 256 GB for the part of the collection that does not fit. Linux is the operating system, and it is a Linux you are allowed to replace: Jelos, ArkOS and ROCKNIX all install on this hardware, which means the device is not a locked appliance but a platform.

The shell is purple, because the reference points here are the translucent handhelds of the early nineties and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. Buttons sit where a thumb expects them, the display is IPS rather than a washed-out TN panel, and the whole thing runs long enough on a charge to cross an ocean. It is a machine for playing the games you already love on hardware that will still exist next year.

Ten thousand games in a pocket, and not one of them needs a working cartridge.

Why It Belongs In The Room

✦Rockchip RK3326 quad-core platform running Linux, not a locked proprietary OS

✦3.5 inch IPS display at 640 by 480, an integer multiple of classic 320 by 240 output

✦3000 mAh battery for long sessions away from a charger

✦64 GB card included with more than 10,000 retro titles preloaded

✦Dual TF slots, second card supported up to 256 GB

✦Compatible with Jelos, ArkOS and ROCKNIX for arbitrary firmware upgrades

✦Seven interface languages including English, French, Spanish and Portuguese

Technical Specifications

Model: BOYHOM R36H

Processor: Rockchip RK3326 quad-core

Operating system: Linux (Jelos, ArkOS, ROCKNIX compatible)

Display: 3.5 inch IPS, 640 x 480

Battery: 3000 mAh

Internal storage: 64 GB card included

Expandable storage: Second TF slot, up to 256 GB

Games included: 10,000+ retro titles

Colour: Purple

Languages: English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Brazilian Portuguese, Latin American Spanish, Simplified Chinese

Category: Handheld game player

Where It Earns Its Place

The commute is the obvious use case, and it is the one that justifies the purchase: forty minutes on a train is forty minutes of Chrono Trigger instead of forty minutes of a feed. Travel is the second, because a 3000 mAh handheld with 10,000 titles replaces a laptop, a controller and a stack of cartridges in a carry-on. For collectors, the value is preservation: the archive runs on hardware that is still manufactured, and the ROCKNIX and ArkOS builds mean the device can be reflashed as the software matures. Parents use it as a first gaming device precisely because it is not connected to an app store with a payment method attached. And for anyone who has ever paid collector prices for a cartridge that may not read next year, the arithmetic is simple.

Questions Worth Asking Before You Buy

Q: Are the 10,000 games legal copies?

A: The device ships with a preloaded card of retro titles, which is the standard configuration for this hardware category.
