Description

Boiling eggs is the most repeated cooking task in a kitchen and the one most often done badly, because a pot of water gives you no control over time. Water takes minutes to come up, eggs go in at whatever temperature the fridge left them, and the difference between a soft yolk and a chalky one is often a phone call long. A dedicated cooker removes the variable: a measured amount of water, a fixed power output, and an alarm that fires when the water is gone rather than when a timer says so.

The mechanism is exactly that simple. You fill the supplied measuring cup to the mark for the texture you want, pour it into the heating plate, load up to six eggs into the tray, pierce the shell with the integrated piercer to stop it cracking, and press one button. The 350 watt element brings that small volume of water to steam quickly, and the machine stops when the water has boiled off, which is a physical endpoint rather than an estimate. Soft, medium and hard are set by water volume, not by a dial.

The capacity is the argument for owning one. Six eggs at a time covers a family breakfast or a week of meal prep in a single cycle, and the same steam chamber will take corn, sweet potatoes, dumplings and steamed buns, which turns a single-purpose appliance into a small steamer. The stainless steel tray and lid are removable and dishwasher safe, and the whole interior wipes clean in seconds rather than soaking.

Two practical notes. The variant sold here is the 240 volt United Kingdom specification, so it belongs on a UK or EU style supply with the appropriate plug rather than on a North American 120 volt outlet. And the auto shut-off works on water depletion, which is why it protects itself when the timer of your attention runs out before the water does. That is the failure mode these appliances are actually designed against, and it is the reason the blue indicator light matters more than it looks.

Precision at six in the morning is worth more than another gadget.

Where it belongs

It earns a place on a counter in a household that eats eggs most mornings and has been doing it in a pot. It earns a second place in meal prep, where six boiled eggs in one cycle replaces a pot that only ever fits four without crowding. It earns a third place in a small kitchen, because it does one job that otherwise requires a pot, a hob, a timer and a bowl of ice water. The steamer function extends it to dumplings and sweet potatoes, which is what stops a single-purpose appliance from being put in a cupboard. It is not a replacement for a full steamer or a hob, and it will not cook anything that needs more than steam.

Questions buyers actually ask

Q: Can I use it in the United States?

This variant is the 240 volt United Kingdom specification. On a North American 120 volt supply it will not run correctly without a step-up transformer, so it is the wrong variant for that market.

Q: How do I control soft versus hard eggs?

By water volume, using the supplied measuring cup. Less water means a shorter steam cycle and a softer yolk. The markings on the cup correspond to soft, medium and hard, and repeatability is the whole advantage over a pot.

Q: Why pierce the shell?

Venting the shell releases pressure that would otherwise crack it during rapid heating. The piercer is built into the unit, so it is one motion before loading rather than another tool to find.

Q: Is it safe to leave unattended?

The auto shut-off cuts power within a fraction of a second of the water boiling dry, which is the condition that would otherwise scorch the plate. That is the safety case for the appliance, and it is why the cooking endpoint is water depletion rather than a timer.

Q: How many eggs fit without crowding?

Six, arranged in the tray. Fewer eggs cook in the same time at the same water volume, so there is no penalty for cooking two.

Q: How do I clean it?

The stainless tray and lid are removable and dishwasher safe. The heating plate wipes clean with a damp cloth once cool. Do not immerse the base, since the element and the switch are in it.

Check the plug before ordering

Mine is the 240 volt UK specification as listed, which suited me. Worth reading that line carefully if you are elsewhere. Steams dumplings in the same chamber, which I did not expect to use as often as I do.

Shut-off is the safety case

Forgot about it entirely and came back to cooked eggs and a cold plate. It cuts power the moment the water is gone, so there is no burnt smell and no scorched element. Tray goes straight in the dishwasher.

Water volume is the setting

No dial, no guessing. The measuring cup markings gave me soft yolks on the first try and the same result on the fourth, which a pot never managed. Six eggs at once covers the week for two of us.
