説明

Timing is a promise an engine makes to itself. Camshaft and crankshaft positions are fixed relative to each other, and a timing belt change breaks that relationship for as long as the belt is off. If a cam rotates a few degrees while the belt is loose, valves and pistons stop agreeing about when to occupy the same space. The result ranges from a rough idle to a bent valve set and a cylinder head on a bench.

The Cam Lock is a five-piece set of holding tools that pins the camshaft in place before the belt comes off and keeps it there until the new belt is tensioned. The shapes cover single overhead cam, dual cam and four cam layouts, which is why one case replaces three separate OEM tools. Bodies are carbon steel for the load path with plastic contact faces where the tool meets a machined cam lobe, since steel against a polished journal is how a workshop creates a scratch it then has to explain.

The compact profile is deliberate. Engine bays have become tighter with every generation, and a holding tool that needs a clear straight approach is useless on a transverse four in a small hatchback. These fit into the gap, engage the cam, and leave room for a wrench on the crank bolt. Colour coding in red also matters more than it sounds: a tool that is visible inside a shadowed bay gets retrieved, and one that is not becomes a rattle six months later.

Procedure, in the order that avoids damage. Rotate the engine to top dead centre on cylinder one by hand, confirm the timing marks align, fit the cam locks, then release belt tension. Never use the locks as a counter-hold for undoing the crank bolt. They hold position; they are not designed to resist torque. With the new belt fitted and tensioned, remove the locks last, turn the engine two full revolutions by hand, and recheck the marks before the first start.

Two minutes of pinning saves an engine. That arithmetic is the entire product.

Key Features

  • ✦ Five-piece set covering single, dual and four camshaft layouts
  • ✦ Carbon steel load path with plastic faces that protect machined journals
  • ✦ Compact profile for tight transverse engine bays
  • ✦ Holds valve timing while a belt is removed and refitted
  • ✦ Visible red finish for retrieval inside a shadowed engine bay
  • ✦ Fits most overhead cam engines without OEM-specific adapters
  • ✦ Supplied as a set so one case replaces three separate tools

Application Scenarios

Independent workshops keep the set in the timing service drawer, because it covers the majority of overhead cam engines that come through a general bay. Mobile mechanics carry it for roadside belt jobs where an OEM-specific tool is not in the van. Enthusiasts doing a first belt change on a project car use it to hold position while they learn the sequence, which is exactly when an engine is most at risk. Engine builders use the locks during assembly checks to confirm cam timing before the head goes back on.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will this fit my specific engine?

A: It covers most single, dual and four cam overhead layouts, but no universal set covers every engine. Check the cam spacing and journal diameter against the tool faces before relying on it for a job.

Q: Can I use it to hold the cam while loosening the cam bolt?

A: No. The locks hold position against valve spring pressure, not against fastener torque. Use a proper counter-hold or the OEM holding feature for bolt removal.

Q: Does it work on variable valve timing engines?

A: On many, yes, but VVT units often require the phaser to be locked separately. Follow the service procedure for the engine, and treat this set as the cam holding element within that procedure.

Q: What happens if the cam moves while the belt is off?

A: Valve and piston timing no longer agree. On an interference engine that can mean bent valves on the first start. If it moves, reset to top dead centre and recheck all marks before continuing.

Q: Is plastic contact really strong enough?

A: The plastic sits where the tool meets the machined surface and carries no significant load path. The carbon steel body takes the force, and the plastic prevents the marring that steel faces cause.

Q: How many tools come in the set?

A: Five, in a case. That count covers single cam, dual cam and four cam configurations, which is why one purchase replaces several individual OEM tools.

Q: Should I turn the engine by hand before starting?

A: Always. Two full revolutions by hand after fitting the new belt confirms there is no interference, and rechecking the timing marks afterwards takes thirty seconds and can save the engine.

Good set, use it correctly

Works well as a holder but you still need a proper counter-hold for the crank bolt, which the instructions say clearly. I tried it the other way once and the tool flexed, so follow the procedure.

Fits where the OEM tool does not

Compact enough to get in behind the strut tower on a transverse four. My old tool needed the engine mount off. Red colour also means I have not lost one yet.

Saved me an engine

Timing belt on a twin cam and the locks held both cams exactly where they needed to be. The plastic faces are the detail that matters, no marks on the journals at all. Two revolutions by hand afterwards confirmed everything lined up.
