Description

A portrait is decided before the shutter is pressed. It is decided by where the light falls and by what stands behind the subject, and both of those decisions depend on a frame that is rigid, tall and honest about its own strength. The Paper Moon is that frame: an aluminium alloy backdrop support system that assembles in minutes, holds a cloth or a paper sweep without sagging, and then folds into a carry bag small enough to travel in the boot of a car.

The structure is built from spray-finished aluminium alloy chosen for three properties that matter in a working studio: it resists rust in humid rooms, it stays light enough to be carried by one person, and it can be assembled without tools. Four clamps are included so that a backdrop is held taut at the top rail rather than pinned and hoped for. The crossbar is telescopic on the telescopic kit, which allows the working width to be adjusted between setups instead of forcing every shoot into one fixed proportion. Available spans of 2 by 2 metres, 2 by 3 metres and 2.6 by 3 metres cover head-and-shoulders work, full-length portraiture and small product sets respectively.

The frame is deliberately multipurpose. Used vertically it is a T-shaped backdrop stand; used with the crossbar reversed it accepts a softbox as a light stand; used with a green screen it becomes a chromakey wall for video work. Buyers should note one thing clearly: this is the stand and its fittings, not the fabric. Backdrops are chosen separately, which is the correct arrangement for anyone who already owns a sweep or who intends to change colour with the season.

A backdrop stand is not scenery. It is the argument the photograph makes about where the subject belongs.

Why This Piece

  • ✦ Aluminium alloy frame — Spray-finished tubing resists rust, stays light and assembles without tools.
  • ✦ Three working spans — 2x2m, 2x3m and 2.6x3m footprints cover headshots, full-length portraits and product sets.
  • ✦ Telescopic crossbar option — The telescopic kit adjusts working width between setups instead of locking to one proportion.
  • ✦ Four clamps included — Backdrops are held taut at the top rail rather than pinned and guessed at.
  • ✦ T-shaped configuration — The same frame works as a backdrop support or as a softbox light stand.
  • ✦ Chromakey ready — Accepts green screen cloth for video and streaming work.
  • ✦ Carry bag included — Collapses into a single fabric bag for transport between locations.

Where It Belongs

This frame is bought by people who photograph for a living and by people who photograph because a product has to be sold. Portrait photographers set it up in a spare room and take it down the same evening. Product sellers use the 2x2m span for tabletop work and the larger spans for full garments and furniture. Streamers and video teams hang a green screen and use the same tubing as a light stand for a softbox. Event photographers take it to venues where nothing can be screwed to the wall. The common requirement in every case is the same: a frame that goes up quickly, holds taut, and does not appear in the photograph.

Questions, Answered

Q: Is a backdrop included?

A: No. This is the stand and its fittings only. Backdrops, sweeps and green screens are chosen separately, which lets you match fabric to the shoot.

Q: What is the difference between the normal and telescopic kits?

A: The telescopic kit has an adjustable crossbar, so the working width can be changed between setups. The normal kit uses fixed-length rails for the stated span.

Q: How long does assembly take?

A: One person can assemble the frame in a few minutes without tools. The tubing sections slot together and the clamps tighten by hand.

Q: Can it be used as a light stand?

A: Yes. The same frame works as a T-shaped backdrop support or as a softbox light stand, which is why studios with limited storage buy it as a dual-purpose item.

Q: Will it hold a heavy cloth?

A: The aluminium tubing and four clamps are designed to hold standard backdrop cloth, paper sweeps and green screen fabric taut at the top rail.

Q: Does it pack down for transport?

A: Yes. The frame collapses into the included carry bag and travels in the boot of a car without disassembly beyond the rail sections.

Good build, remember there is no backdrop

The stand is sturdy and folds down neatly. Just be aware the cloth is not included, which I had missed when ordering. Ordered a separate green screen and it clipped on with no issues at all.

Doubles as a light stand

Bought it for backdrop work and ended up using the same frame to hold a softbox when the studio got busy. The telescopic crossbar was worth the extra, it lets me change the working width instead of moving the whole rig.

Frame holds a heavy cloth without sagging

Assembled alone in about five minutes with no tools. I use it with a 3m wide muslin and it stays taut across the top rail because the four clamps actually grip. The aluminium is light enough to carry up a flight of stairs in the bag.
