Description

A camera is not a witness. It is a decision made in advance. Long before anything happens on a driveway or a loading dock, someone has already decided what the record should look like, and that decision is either carried or lost by the hardware standing watch. The Watchtower POE is built for the losing side of that bet to become impossible.

Inside the vandal-resistant metal dome sits a 5.0 megapixel Sony CMOS sensor paired with a 2.8mm wide lens and an 80 degree field of view. Its minimum illumination is 0.001 lux, which means it keeps resolving detail long after the human eye has surrendered the scene to darkness. H.265 compression halves the bandwidth of the previous generation, ONVIF 2.4 speaks to essentially any recorder on the market, and a single RJ45 run carries both data and power over PoE. There is no second cable, no adapter, and no proprietary hub standing between the sensor and the footage.

The housing is metal, not painted plastic, and it is rated IP67 for continuous outdoor exposure. Infrared coverage reaches 10 to 15 metres, face detection runs on the edge, and the 2 watt draw means a standard PoE switch can feed a full perimeter without a second thought about load. Mount it to a ceiling, point it at the thing that matters, and forget that it is there.

It does not blink. That is the entire promise.

Professional surveillance hardware engineered for continuous outdoor duty

Key Features

  • ✦ 5.0MP Sony CMOS sensor with H.265 compression for high-resolution, low-bandwidth recording
  • ✦ 2.8mm wide lens delivering an 80 degree field of view with edge face detection
  • ✦ 0.001 lux minimum illumination for usable low-light imaging without floodlights
  • ✦ Single-cable PoE (RJ45) plus DC12V 1A fallback - 2W typical draw
  • ✦ Vandal-resistant metal dome shell, IP67 rated for year-round outdoor service
  • ✦ 10-15m infrared range for night coverage of entries, yards and loading bays
  • ✦ ONVIF 2.4 compliant - records to any NVR or VMS on Windows, macOS, Android or iOS

Application Scenarios

The Watchtower POE was designed for the places where a gap in the record costs real money. It suits residential driveways and side gates, retail back doors, small warehouse loading bays, workshop yards, and multi-unit buildings where one recorder has to supervise several independent zones. Because it speaks ONVIF rather than a single vendor language, it drops into an existing NVR deployment without a migration project, and because it runs on PoE, a failed power outlet is never the reason footage is missing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does this camera require a separate power supply?

A: No. It is powered over Ethernet through a single RJ45 cable, so a PoE switch or PoE injector is all that is required. A DC12V 1A input is available as a fallback for installations that do not run PoE.

Q: Will it work with my existing NVR?

A: Yes. The camera is ONVIF 2.4 compliant, so it works with NVRs and VMS platforms from essentially any manufacturer using the ONVIF protocol. It does not need to be matched to a specific brand of recorder.

Q: What does 0.001 lux actually mean in practice?

A: It is the lowest light level at which the sensor still produces a usable image. In practice, the camera keeps resolving shapes and motion in near-darkness, with infrared coverage extending 10 to 15 metres further.

Q: Is it suitable for outdoor use in rain and snow?

A: The housing is metal with an IP67 rating, meaning it is protected against dust ingress and temporary immersion. It is engineered for continuous outdoor exposure rather than occasional sheltered use.

Q: Can I view the feed from a phone?

A: Yes. The camera supports Android and iOS clients through the recorder or VMS platform, in addition to Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10 and macOS on desktop.

Q: How much cable can one run carry?

A: Both data and power travel over the same Ethernet cable. Standard PoE cable runs are typically limited to around 100 metres per segment, which is ample for most residential and light commercial layouts.

Q: Is a power adapter included in the box?

A: No. The camera is designed to be powered over Ethernet from a PoE switch or PoE injector, which is not supplied. A DC12V 1A supply can be used instead if PoE is unavailable at the mounting point.

Q: Why choose a dome format over a bullet camera?

A: A dome is far harder to knock out of alignment and much less obvious about where it is pointing, which makes it the better choice for entries, driveways and interior ceilings. A bullet camera is generally preferred only when you need a longer throw at a distant target.

The low-light performance is the selling point

It keeps producing usable detail well past the point where my old camera gave up and went grey. Face detection has been reliable across the driveway and the side gate.

Solid build, infrared is good rather than spectacular

Metal dome and the PoE setup are exactly as described. Infrared coverage is honest at the shorter end of the stated range, so plan the mounting position with that in mind. Resolution and low-light performance are excellent.

Dropped straight into my existing NVR

ONVIF worked on the first attempt with the recorder I already had, which was the main reason I chose it. The metal housing feels like it was built for outdoor service rather than a season of it.

Replaced two cameras and wished I had done it sooner

Swapped a pair of old analogue units for these. One Ethernet run each, no local power needed at the mounting point, and the image at night is far cleaner than what I was getting before.
