Description

Some Tools Pull. This One Commits.

The Ironhold is a 60mm neodymium pot magnet rated to 120KG of vertical pull force against a 30mm steel plate. A single-sided attracting face concentrates the field where it is needed rather than wasting half of it on the back of the housing. The machined centre hole lets you bolt the magnet to a bracket, thread a line through it for recovery work, or attach a hook without relying on the coating to hold. This is rare-earth neodymium, and the pull force is real, not a marketing figure measured on a polished test rig.

The 10-metre, 5mm rope is rated for the load and made to survive water, mud and the kind of handling that a tool receives when it is working. The magnet itself contains no dysprosium or terbium, so it keeps its strength through cold mornings and hot afternoons without the brittleness that some high-temperature grades develop. It will hold a dropped tool in a lift shaft, retrieve a key from a drain, and pull a submerged object out of a river, all on the same afternoon, and it will do it without a battery, a charger or a manual.

What people underestimate about a magnet this size is the discipline it demands. At 120KG of vertical pull, it is strong enough to injure fingers if it is allowed to snap against a steel plate unguided, and strong enough to erase a mechanical watch left nearby. Treat it like the serious tool it is and it becomes the most reliable piece of recovery equipment in the kit. Store it on a steel plate, keep it away from pacemakers and cards, and it will outlast the toolbag it travels in.

This is not a gadget. It is the hand you reach into the dark with.

Application Scenarios

River and lake treasure hunting is the obvious use, where a heavy pot magnet dragged along a riverbed recovers what a rake cannot reach. Beyond that, it earns its place in a maintenance kit: retrieving dropped fasteners and tools from machinery pits, lifts and drains. On a workshop wall it holds jigs and fixtures exactly where they are needed for welding or assembly. Salvage and scrap work benefits from the same 120KG rating. In each case the value is not the magnet alone but the 10-metre rope, which is what lets you work at a distance from anything you cannot see.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How strong is 120KG in practice?

The figure is measured vertically against a 30mm steel plate under ideal conditions. On thin sheet metal, painted surfaces, or when pulling at an angle, expect less. Always attach the rope so the load pulls the magnet toward the steel rather than sliding it sideways.

Q: Will it work underwater?

Yes. The magnet is a solid neodymium unit and the included rope is made for water, so river and lake recovery is exactly what the set is built for. Rinse and dry the assembly after saltwater use to protect the plating.

Q: Is the rope strong enough for the pull force?

The supplied 10-metre rope is rated to match the application, but in practice you rarely pull the full 120KG. Use the rope to drag the magnet across a surface rather than lifting at full force, and inspect it for abrasion before each session.

Q: Can it damage electronics or watches?

It can. Strong neodymium fields can interfere with pacemakers, mechanical watches, bank cards and some electronics. Keep the magnet a safe distance from any of these, and never carry it loose in a pocket beside a phone.

Q: How should I store it?

Store the magnet attached to a steel plate, or in the supplied position against a keeper plate. This protects the surface coating and, more importantly, prevents the magnet from snapping violently onto steel objects while loose in a toolbox.

River treasure hunting

Took it out on the river twice. Dragged it along the bottom behind the boat and recovered a fair bit of scrap, plus a lost fishing knife. Solid build and no rust so far.

Powerful and well made

Holds firmly on a 3mm plate though obviously not at the full 120KG on thin steel. Rope is good quality. Keep it away from your phone.

Serious magnet, treat it with respect

Strong enough that you need to guide it onto steel rather than let it snap. Used it to recover a socket from a machine pit at work. The centre hole let me bolt it to a bracket for a vertical pull.

Pulled a set of keys out of a drain

First use was a dropped keyring down a storm drain. The 120KG rating is no joke, it locked onto the grate and the keys came up first try. The 10 metre rope gives plenty of reach.
