説明

Between a panel and a battery sits a small computer that decides how much of the day you keep. Panels are inexpensive and batteries are not. The difference between harvesting most of what an array produces and losing a substantial share of it comes down to whether the controller tracks the array at its maximum power point or simply clamps it down to battery voltage.

The Solar Gripper is a maximum power point tracking controller rated at 80 amps of charge current with a maximum photovoltaic input of 150 volts. It detects battery banks at 12, 24, 36 or 48 volts, so the same unit covers a small cabin system and a larger off-grid installation without swapping hardware. It charges sealed lead acid, vented gel and lithium chemistries, communicates over RS485 using the Modbus protocol for integration with monitoring and automation, and carries a backlit LCD that shows state without a laptop attached.

Stepping up from a PWM controller to MPPT is the single highest-return upgrade in a small solar system, because the harvest gain applies to every hour of every sunny day for the life of the installation. Add the RS485 port and the controller stops being a black box on the wall and becomes a data point you can log, script against and alert on.

The panel is the easy part. This is the component that decides what you get to keep.

Where It Belongs

Solar controllers of this class end up in installations that cannot call an electrician when something drifts. An off-grid cabin where the lights, the fridge and the water pump all depend on the battery bank staying healthy. A boat or a camper where the alternator is not enough and the panels do the real work. A remote agricultural site running a pump, a gate motor or a fence energiser. A telecom or monitoring cabinet that has to stay powered through the winter without a mains feed. In every one of those cases the controller is what stands between an expensive battery bank and a slow death by undercharging, and the RS485 interface is what lets an owner watch that health rather than guess at it. Buyers running lithium should confirm the charge profile against their battery manufacturer's specification before commissioning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What does MPPT actually do differently from a PWM controller?

A PWM controller ties the array to the battery voltage, which pulls the panels away from the point where they produce most power. An MPPT controller runs the array at its maximum power point and converts the surplus down to a charging voltage, so more of the available energy reaches the battery. In practice, the gain shows up most on cool, bright days and on arrays whose voltage is well above the battery bank.

Q: Which battery voltages does it support?

It detects 12V, 24V, 36V and 48V battery banks, so one controller covers a range of system sizes. The array voltage must stay within the 150V maximum photovoltaic input limit.

Q: Can it charge lithium batteries?

Lithium is listed among the supported chemistries alongside sealed lead acid and vented gel. Confirm the exact charge profile and limits against the battery manufacturer's documentation for the specific cells you are using before commissioning.

Q: What is the RS485 port for?

RS485 with Modbus protocol allows the controller to be read, and where supported configured, by monitoring equipment, data loggers and automation software. It converts the controller from a device you look at into a data point you can record.

Q: Do I need special software to use it?

The backlit LCD shows operating state on the unit itself, so the controller works standalone. The RS485 Modbus interface is there for users who want remote monitoring or integration, and it speaks a standard protocol rather than a proprietary one.

Q: Is it suitable for a 48V system?

Yes, 48V is one of the detected battery voltages, and the 80A charge rating and 150V array limit suit larger banks rather than only small installations.

48V bank, no issues at all

Running it on a 48 volt bank with an array well inside the 150 volt limit. Detected the bank on first power up and has held the profile since.

Great controller, thin manual

Does exactly what it should and the LCD is readable in daylight. The documentation is basic, so plan on checking your battery manufacturer's charge profile yourself before commissioning.

RS485 into my own logger

Speaking Modbus over RS485 means I feed the controller straight into the monitoring I already run instead of looking at an app. That alone justified buying it.

Harvest improved noticeably after swapping from PWM

Replaced a PWM controller on a cabin array and the battery reaches absorption voltage earlier in the day. Same panels, same bank, different controller, and the difference is visible in the log.
