説明

Heat Is a Form of Hospitality.

The difference between a forgettable coffee and one that changes the shape of a morning is almost never the bean. It is the milk: how much air it can hold, how evenly it is warmed, how long the foam stands before it surrenders into the cup. Cafes spend thousands on machines to control that single variable. At home, most people simply accept whatever their kettle and a hand whisk can improvise. The Velvet Ember exists because that compromise was never necessary.

Inside its brushed body sits a 400W heating element wrapped in 304 stainless steel, driven by a magnetic frothing assembly that pulls air into the milk rather than tearing it apart. Four programs cover the entire vocabulary of a home espresso bar. Dense hot foam at 60 degrees, for a cappuccino that holds its dome. A lighter hot foam, for lattes where texture should support rather than dominate. Heated milk without air, for the flat white purist. Cold foam at room temperature, for the iced drinks that summer insists on. A fourth setting raises the chamber to 70 degrees for hot chocolate, the only temperature at which cocoa butter fully releases its aroma.

The engineering is quiet. There is no whistle, no rattle, no screaming steam wand. The unit works at low noise, shuts itself off the moment the milk reaches its target, and its non-stick interior releases residue with a single wipe. The base detaches so the chamber can be rinsed without dragging a cord across the counter. A 600ml working chamber — 430ml when heating, 160ml when frothing — is sized for two generous servings, not for a single timid one. Whole milk above 3% fat produces the most architectural foam; the machine simply rewards the ingredient you give it.

This is not an appliance. It is the smallest room in the house where you are allowed to be slow.

Key Features

  • ✦ Four programs, one button: dense hot foam, light hot foam, heated milk and cold foam, each calibrated to its own temperature and chamber level.
  • ✦ 400W rapid heating: usable froth in roughly two minutes, with automatic shut-off at the target temperature.
  • ✦ Hot chocolate mode: a dedicated 70-degree cycle that melts cocoa solids properly instead of scalding them at a boil.
  • ✦ 600ml chamber: 430ml for heated milk, 160ml for foam — enough for two large drinks per cycle.
  • ✦ 304 stainless steel interior: food-grade, scratch resistant and free of reactive coatings.
  • ✦ Non-stick, wipe-clean chamber: residue lifts with a damp cloth; the jug is not dishwasher safe, and it does not need to be.
  • ✦ Detachable power base: cordless pouring, no cable trailing through the counter when you serve.
  • ✦ Low-noise motor: conversation-level operation for early kitchens and shared apartments.

Where It Belongs

This is a countertop instrument for people who have already decided that the coffee ritual matters: the home barista working through latte art on a narrow kitchen counter, the small cafe or office pantry that needs consistent foam without a two-group espresso machine, the household where one person drinks a flat white and another drinks iced coffee in the same ten minutes. It also solves a problem most frothers ignore — hot chocolate. At 70 degrees the cocoa butter melts without the milk boiling over, which is why the drink tastes like chocolate rather than like sweet warm milk. Use whole milk above 3% fat for structure, semi-skimmed for a lighter foam, and plant milks only if you accept a looser bubble and a shorter standing time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How many drinks can one cycle make?

A: The 600ml chamber holds 430ml when heating milk and 160ml when frothing. In practice that is two generous cappuccinos or two large lattes per cycle, or one very large hot chocolate.

Q: Does it really froth cold milk?

A: Yes. The cold foam program runs the whisk at room temperature without engaging the heater, producing a cold microfoam for iced lattes and cold brew. Cold foam is thinner than hot foam by nature and should be poured immediately.

Q: What voltage does it use, and which plug is included?

A: This is the 220V UK plug variant, rated at 400W. It is intended for UK and compatible 220-240V sockets and should not be run on 110V supplies without a step-up transformer.

Q: Can the jug go in the dishwasher?

A: No. The chamber has a non-stick coating and an electrical base coupling; dishwasher detergent and immersion will damage both. Rinse the interior by hand and wipe the exterior with a damp towel, keeping water away from the bottom.

Q: Why did my milk fail to thicken?

A: Foam is a protein structure, and it needs fat and protein to hold. Milk below 3% fat, long-life UHT milk near the end of its date, or overfilling past the marked level all produce a loose, collapsing foam. Start at 140ml to 160ml with fresh whole milk.

Q: Does it switch off by itself?

A: Yes. The thermostat ends the cycle when the milk reaches 60 degrees (70 degrees in chocolate mode) and cuts power automatically, which is what prevents scorched milk at the base of the jug.

Excellent, but read the milk note

The unit is quiet, the base detaches so I can carry it to the table, and the non-stick interior wipes clean in seconds. My first attempt with semi-skimmed milk gave a thin foam until I switched to whole milk above 3% fat, then it was perfect. Worth knowing before you blame the machine.

The chocolate setting sold me

Most machines only heat milk, so hot chocolate ends up tasting like sweet warm milk. The 70 degree chocolate program is noticeably different, the cocoa actually dissolves and the drink tastes like chocolate. I use the cold foam mode on weekends for iced lattes and it works, though the foam is looser than the hot setting.

Finally, foam that actually holds

I have been through two cheaper frothers that produced warm milk with a few bubbles on top. This one builds a dense foam that still has structure when I pour the espresso through it, and the 160ml foam level is exactly right for two cappuccinos. The auto shut-off means I can walk away and come back to the same result every morning.
