説明

Incense is a small ritual with an outsized mess. The stick burns down, the ash falls onto whatever is underneath, and the room ends up with a grey film on the furniture and a holder that only fits one kind of incense. The Still Point is a five in one answer to that: one base tray, three different holders, and a footprint large enough that the ash lands where it was intended to land. It is built from zinc alloy and brass rather than from a single stamped sheet, which is why it can be used assembled or broken into its parts depending on what is burning.

Everything about the geometry comes back to the tray. It measures 17.5 by 8.5 centimetres, long enough that a full stick of incense burns over solid metal from end to end, and the raised edge keeps the ash from migrating onto the table. Above it sit the interchangeable pieces: a brass gourd shaped holder that accepts incense up to 3 millimetres in diameter, a nine hole disc with three hole sizes for sticks of different thicknesses, and a holder five centimetres across that takes a standard Palo Santo stick or a bundle of smudging sage. Swap the piece rather than the product.

The material choice is the part that ages well. Zinc alloy gives the base enough weight to stay where it is put, and brass develops a patina rather than corroding, so the set looks better in its second year than its first. Nothing about it belongs to a single tradition: the same tray holds Japanese sticks, Indian coil incense, a cone, or a Palo Santo stick lit for a room that needs a slower kind of reset. It is one object that covers the entire habit instead of one piece of it.

The ash falls where it is told, and the room keeps none of it.

Key Features

  • ✦ Five in one configuration: one base tray plus three interchangeable holders covering stick, cone, coil, Palo Santo and sage.
  • ✦ Full ash catchment base: the 17.5 by 8.5 cm tray runs the full length of a standard incense stick, so ash lands on metal rather than on furniture.
  • ✦ Brass gourd holder: accepts incense sticks up to 3 mm in diameter and sits at the centre of the composition.
  • ✦ Nine hole disc holder: three hole sizes at 1, 2 and 3 mm, so both thin Japanese sticks and thicker Indian sticks fit without wobbling.
  • ✦ Palo Santo and sage holder: a 5 cm cup for standard Palo Santo sticks or a tied bundle of smudging sage.
  • ✦ Zinc alloy and brass construction: enough weight to stay in place, with brass that patinas gracefully instead of corroding.
  • ✦ Stacks or separates: the pieces can be used together as one unit or distributed around a room as three independent holders.

Application Scenarios

The Still Point earns its place in three different rooms. On a meditation or yoga shelf it holds a stick for a twenty minute sit, then converts to the Palo Santo cup for a slower burn on a longer evening. In a home office it takes a cone or a coil, which is the format that suits a working day better than a stick because it keeps burning while attention is elsewhere. In a bathroom it collects the ash that would otherwise land on a tile grout line, and the zinc alloy base stays put on a wet surface. As a gift, the assembled set reads as a considered object rather than a single purpose accessory, and the fact that the pieces stack means it fits on a windowsill where a conventional burner would not.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What incense can I burn in this set?

Stick incense up to 3 mm in diameter in the gourd holder, thinner sticks in the 1 mm and 2 mm holes of the disc, cones and coils on the tray itself, and standard Palo Santo sticks or a tied sage bundle in the 5 cm cup.

Q: Is the tray big enough to catch everything?

It measures 17.5 by 8.5 cm and runs the full length of a standard incense stick, so a complete burn falls onto metal. Cones and coils that burn down in the centre are fully contained by the raised edge.

Q: Will the brass tarnish?

Brass darkens naturally with time and use, and most owners prefer the patina. If you want it bright, a soft cloth and a little brass polish will bring it back without affecting the structure.

Q: Can the pieces be used separately?

Yes. The base, the gourd holder and the disc can each be used on their own, which means one set can serve three positions in a home at the same time.

Q: How do I clean it?

Tip the ash out after each burn and wipe the tray with a dry cloth. Do not leave it soaking in water, since the alloy base does not need to be immersed and the brass will spot if it dries slowly.

Q: Does it come assembled?

It arrives as four separate pieces that stack together as pictured. No tools or assembly instructions are required, since the holders simply sit on the base.

Three holders, three rooms

I use the base in the living room, the disc in the office and the small holder by the bath. One set doing the work of three purchases, and the pieces stack away into nothing when travelling.

Beautiful set, empty the ash

Looks considered on a shelf and the zinc alloy base stays put. The only thing to remember is to tip the ash out after each burn, since leaving it sitting there dulls the brass underneath.

Palo santo holder is the reason I bought it

The five centimetre cup takes a standard palo santo stick and a tied sage bundle, which most holders simply do not accommodate. The brass has darkened nicely over a couple of months.

Finally an incense holder that catches everything

The tray is long enough that a full stick burns over metal and nothing reaches the shelf beneath. I use the nine hole disc for thin sticks and the gourd holder for thicker ones, so no more wobbling.
