説明

A firewall in a closet has one job: to be forgotten. The moment it becomes audible, it has already failed at something. Fans are the first component to die and the first to announce themselves, which is why serious network hardware is designed to run without them. The QOTOM Q555G6 belongs to that lineage: a sealed, finned aluminium chassis with no moving parts inside, sized for a shelf or a wall bracket rather than a rack.

Its purpose is segmentation. Six Intel Gigabit Ethernet ports let a single box separate a WAN uplink, a trusted LAN, an IoT segment, a guest network and a management plane without a stack of switches and patch cables. AES-NI acceleration handles the encryption overhead that turns a cheap router into a bottleneck the moment a VPN is enabled. A hardware watchdog restarts the unit if the operating system ever stops responding, which is the difference between a device that needs a site visit and one that recovers itself.

Configuration is deliberately open. The unit ships ready for pfSense, and runs OPNsense, Sophos, Ubuntu or any x86 distribution without vendor lock. Processor choice spans Core i3-7100U through i5 and i7-6500U options, with DDR4L SO-DIMM memory and SSD capacities selected at order time, from a barebone chassis to a fully populated 16GB / 256GB build. A COM port remains for console access when the network is exactly what is broken. Passive cooling holds the design inside a 15W thermal envelope and an operating range of 0 to 50 degrees Celsius.

Good infrastructure is not the thing you admire. It is the thing you never have to think about.

Engineering notes

✦ Fanless by construction. No fan, no dust ingress, no bearing whine. The chassis is the heatsink, which is why the unit can live in a habitable room without being noticed.

✦ Six Gigabit ports. Enough physical interfaces to separate WAN, LAN, IoT, guest and management traffic on one device, with no VLAN gymnastics required.

✦ AES-NI hardware crypto. Encryption is offloaded to the CPU instruction set, so site-to-site tunnels and remote access do not collapse throughput.

✦ Hardware watchdog. If the system hangs, the watchdog resets the box. Remote sites recover without a truck roll.

✦ Open platform. pfSense preloaded, with OPNsense, Sophos, Ubuntu and other x86 systems supported. No subscription firmware, no vendor account.

✦ Console access retained. A COM port and four USB ports remain for recovery, cellular modems or serial consoles when the GUI is unreachable.

✦ Selected at order time. Barebone through 16GB / 256GB configurations, with i3-7100U, i5 and i7-6500U processor tiers.

Where operators deploy it

The obvious placement is a small office or clinic that needs a real firewall but has no rack and no air-conditioned comms room. The second is a branch site where a fanless box on a shelf survives dust, heat and being ignored for two years. Integrators use them as edge routers with a VPN back to head office, where AES-NI matters more than core count. Home labs and homelabs-with-a-mortgage use them to separate IoT devices from trusted systems, a job that gets harder every year as cheap devices multiply. Because there is no Wi-Fi radio, the unit is normally paired with a separate access point: put the radio where the signal is needed, keep the routing where the cables are.

Operator questions

Q. Which software does it ship with?

Units ship with pfSense preloaded. OPNsense, Sophos and mainstream Linux distributions install normally because the platform is standard x86 with Intel networking.

Q. Is it fast enough for gigabit internet?

The processor tiers differ. i3-7100U handles ordinary routing and NAT at gigabit line rate; enabling deep packet inspection or heavy VPN throughput moves the requirement up to the i5 or i7 tier. Buy for the features you will actually turn on.

Q. Why is there no Wi-Fi?

Deliberate. A firewall belongs where the cabling terminates, not where coverage is needed, and an integrated radio would compromise the sealed chassis. Pair it with an access point.

Q. What is the watchdog for?

It monitors the operating system and reboots the unit if it stops responding. For an unmanned branch site this is the difference between self-recovery and a service call.

Q. Can I buy it barebone and add my own memory and SSD?

Yes. The barebone tier ships without RAM or storage, using DDR4L SO-DIMM memory and a standard SSD. Confirm the configuration at checkout if you want a validated build instead.

Q. How is it powered and mounted?

An external adapter supplies the unit, and the chassis is designed for shelf or wall-bracket placement. There are no fans to fail and no filters to clean.

Supply and support. Configurations are assembled and checked before dispatch, and the pfSense image is confirmed bootable on the exact memory and storage combination you order. Integrators buying in volume can request consistent hardware revisions across an order, because a branch rollout is easier when every box is identical.

Buy the i5 if you run IDS

Solid hardware and the COM port is genuinely useful for console recovery. I would not pair the i3 with heavy intrusion detection and a VPN at the same time; throughput drops. Choose the processor for the features you will actually enable.

Branch office box that recovers itself

We deploy these to sites with no IT staff. The watchdog has already saved one location a service call. Six NICs let us keep guest, POS and management traffic physically separate, which is simpler to document than a pile of VLANs.

Six ports, no fan, dead silent

Replaced a small appliance behind the rack with this. The i3 tier routes my gigabit line without breaking a sweat, and there is no fan noise at all, which matters because the box sits in a habitable room. pfSense booted on first power up.
