説明

A cat tree is furniture that has to survive an animal, and most of them are designed as if the animal were decorative. The Third Perch is built the other way round: a 72 centimetre frame with a 53 by 33 centimetre footprint, a jute-wrapped scratch post that takes claw damage instead of the sofa, a raised perch with a removable cushion, and an enclosed condo for the hours when a cat wants to be off the floor and out of sight.

Height is calibrated. Seventy-two centimetres puts the perch at window-sill level, which is where most indoor cats actually want to sit, and it keeps the centre of gravity low enough that a hard landing does not tip the frame. The base is wide relative to the height for the same reason. Anti-toppling hardware is included, because a tree that can fall is a tree a cat stops trusting, and once a cat stops trusting a structure it never uses it again.

The materials are chosen for wear rather than for show. Jute rope on the post gives the resistance a claw needs, flannel on the resting surfaces gives warmth without static, and the cushion in the perch is removable so it can be washed instead of becoming a permanent fur reservoir. The condo has a raised rim that keeps draughts off a sleeping cat and gives it something to brace against when it turns around inside.

Assembly is the part buyers underestimate. The frame ships flat with the posts, platforms and hardware separated by part number, and it goes together with the included tool in about twenty minutes. Everything a cat touches is replaceable: the rope post, the cushion, the perch cover. That is the difference between furniture you keep for a decade and a cardboard scratcher you replace every season.

A cat does not want more toys. It wants a place that is higher than the floor and belongs to it.

Where it belongs

Flats where the cat cannot go outside, small living rooms that need vertical space more than floor space, multi-cat homes where one animal needs a high retreat from another, and any household where the sofa has already lost a corner to claws. It sits beside a window so the perch becomes a watch point, or in a corner so the condo becomes a den. For a single indoor cat in a one-bedroom flat, one tree at this height covers scratching, sleeping and watching.

Questions buyers actually ask

Q: Is it stable with a large cat?

The base is 53 by 33 cm against a 72 cm height, which keeps the centre of gravity low, and anti-toppling hardware is included for fixing to a wall. For a cat over about 7 kg, fix it to the wall and place it against a corner.

Q: How long does assembly take?

About twenty minutes with the included tool. The parts are numbered and the posts, platforms and hardware are packed in order, so no drilling or cutting is needed.

Q: Can the scratch post be replaced?

Yes. The jute rope post is a wear part, and replacing it is cheaper than replacing the tree. Rope condition is the first thing to check when a cat loses interest in the post.

Q: Will the cushion survive washing?

The perch cushion is removable and machine washable on a gentle cycle. Air dry it rather than tumbling, since heat flattens the filling.

Q: Does it work for two cats?

It can, though two cats will compete for the perch. The condo gives the second animal a place to retreat to, which is usually enough to stop conflict in a small flat.

Q: Which colour should I choose?

Match the room rather than the cat. Neutral tones disappear into a living room; darker tones hide fur better. Both configurations ship flat with the same hardware.

Compact and stable, low perch

Good for a flat where floor space is tight, and the condo gives her somewhere to hide from the dog. Perch is at windowsill height, so it is lower than a full tower. Fixed the anti-tip strap because she is a big cat.

The jute post saved my sofa

Two weeks in and she has not touched the sofa corner once. Jute gives the resistance she wants, the sisal one I had before was too smooth. Cushion comes out for washing which matters more than I expected with a long haired cat.

Assembly took twenty minutes

Everything numbered, one tool, no drilling. My cat was on the perch before I finished tidying the box. Base is wide enough that it does not shift when she launches off the top.
