説明

A night light has one job in a child's room and a different one in an adult's. In a child's room it has to be bright enough to make the dark negotiable and dim enough not to wake anyone at three in the morning. In an adult's room it has to be a light you can reach in the dark without hunting for a switch. This one answers both with a body you tap rather than a button you find, which turns out to be the entire design argument.

The form is an axolotl, and the material is why the form survives contact with a real child. Food grade BPA free silicone, soft to the touch, with the light diffused through the body rather than emitted from a point. Squeeze it and it returns to shape. Drop it and nothing cracks. The touch sensor cycles through brightness levels and the off state, so a child can operate it without instruction, and there is no small switch to break or to be defeated by small hands.

The power design is more considered than the price suggests. Input is DC 5 volt at 1 amp over USB, and the internal cell is 1200 mAh, which gives sixteen hours at high brightness and fifty-six hours at low. Fifty-six hours is the number that matters, because low brightness is what a night light actually runs at: it means roughly a week of nights between charges, not a nightly ritual of finding the cable. Charging over USB also means the same cable as everything else in the house.

The honest limits are the ones printed on any silicone lamp. It is a sleep lamp, not a projector, so the light pools rather than fills. The silicone will pick up dust and lint over months and wants a wipe with a damp cloth rather than a wash. And it is not a medical device or a therapy light, whatever the listing category says. What it is, is a soft object that gives a small room a low glow and a child a reason to stop asking for the big light to stay on.

The dark is easier to negotiate with something soft in it.

What you are actually buying

  • ✦ Food grade BPA free silicone body, soft to the touch and safe for a child's room.
  • ✦ Touch sensor cycling through brightness levels, with no switch to break or lose.
  • ✦ 1200 mAh internal cell giving 16 hours at high brightness and 56 hours at low.
  • ✦ DC 5 V 1 A USB charging, so it shares a cable with the rest of the house.
  • ✦ Diffused light through the body rather than a point source, so the glow pools instead of glaring.
  • ✦ Axolotl form that holds its shape when squeezed and survives being dropped.

Where it belongs

It works in a nursery as the light that stays on after the main light goes off, at the low setting where fifty-six hours of run time actually means something. It works in a child's bedroom as a lamp they control themselves, which is usually the difference between a bedtime argument and a bedtime. It works on an adult bedside table as a reachable glow for a 3 a.m. glass of water, and it works as a gift precisely because the form is specific: an axolotl is not a generic animal lamp, and children who know what one is tend to be delighted by it.

Questions buyers actually ask

Q: Is it safe for a baby's room?

The body is food grade BPA free silicone and the light is diffused rather than a point source, so it is designed for a child's room. Charging should always happen with an adult present and away from the cot, as with any device containing a cell.

Q: How long does a charge last?

Sixteen hours at high brightness and fifty-six hours at low. Since a night light normally runs at the low setting, that is roughly a week of nights between charges.

Q: Can a child work it?

Yes. It responds to touch and cycles through brightness levels, so there is no switch to find in the dark and nothing mechanical to break.

Q: Is it bright enough to read by?

No, and it is not meant to be. It is a sleep lamp that pools light rather than filling a room. For reading, a directed lamp is the right tool.

Q: How do I clean it?

Wipe with a damp cloth. Do not machine wash or submerge it, since the cell and charging port are inside the silicone body.

Q: Does the silicone attract dust?

Over months, yes, as any soft silicone surface does. A damp cloth wipe every few weeks keeps it clean, and avoiding fabric softener sheets nearby stops the static that pulls lint to it.

Wipe it, do not wash it

Lovely object and the light is warm rather than clinical. Silicone picks up lint over a few weeks, so a damp cloth every so often is needed. Do not submerge it, the port is inside the body.

Fifty six hours at low is real

Charged it once and it ran for eight nights at the dim setting before I plugged it in again. The glow pools rather than filling the room, which is what makes it usable as a sleep light instead of a lamp.

Soft enough to hand to a toddler

The silicone is genuinely soft and it returns to shape after being squeezed flat. My daughter works it herself by tapping, so there is no switch to hunt for at three in the morning. Low setting lasts about a week of nights.
