説明
Every household has a box of tapes that nothing can play any more. The Analog Gate is a USB 2.0 capture bridge that takes composite and S-Video out of a camcorder or a VCR and writes it into a computer as a file, so the footage stops depending on a deck that is one belt failure away from being useless.
The unit takes red, white and yellow RCA into one end and outputs USB into the other. Composite carries the video and the audio; S-Video carries video on its own with a visible improvement in colour separation for camcorder footage. It reads PAL, SECAM and NTSC, so tapes recorded in Europe, the United States or Japan all play through the same bridge when the source deck can play them.
On the computer side it works with Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista and XP, and writes MPEG 1, MPEG 2, AVI, WMV and ASF depending on the software you pair it with. The included lead set provides the SCART adapter and the RCA cable, which is the part most people forget to buy. Capture happens in real time, which means a two-hour tape takes two hours to digitise. There is no shortcut around that, and any device promising otherwise is compressing the picture to hide it.
A tape that cannot be played is already lost. A file that exists in three places is not.
What it captures
- ✦ Captures VHS, VHS-C, Hi8 and camcorder footage into a computer over USB 2.0.
- ✦ Composite RCA and S-Video inputs, with PAL, SECAM and NTSC support.
- ✦ Works with Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista and XP without a separate capture card.
- ✦ Writes MPEG 1, MPEG 2, AVI, WMV and ASF through the capture software.
- ✦ Includes the RCA lead and SCART adapter needed for European VCRs.
- ✦ Small enough to travel with a laptop for converting a family collection on site.
- ✦ Also captures gameplay from older consoles with composite or S-Video output.

Jobs people actually use it for
Someone sorting a parent's belongings needs to know what is on forty tapes before deciding what to keep. A band or a film student with footage shot on a camcorder needs it in an edit suite rather than on a shelf. Anyone archiving a wedding shot in 1996 wants at least one copy that does not rely on a working deck. Gameplay from a PlayStation 2 or an original Xbox captures the same way when the console has composite output. All of these jobs run through the same small bridge, and the recording is only as good as the deck feeding it.
Compatibility questions
Q: Does it work on a Mac?
No. This model is specified for Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista and XP. Mac users need a different capture device.
Q: Is the software included?
The unit captures through Windows capture software and its own driver. Many people pair it with free capture applications, which is why we describe it as a bridge rather than a suite.
Q: How long does a two-hour tape take?
About two hours. Capture runs in real time. A faster result means the picture has been compressed, and the detail is gone with it.
Q: Why does my picture look washed out?
Composite video carries colour and brightness together, so slight bleeding is normal. Use the S-Video input where the deck supports it for cleaner separation.
Q: Can I capture copy-protected tapes?
Copy-protected commercial tapes will not capture. This device is intended for home recordings, which are not protected.
Q: Does it record audio?
Yes, through the red and white RCA connectors when the video is fed in as composite. S-Video carries picture only, so bring the audio in on RCA.
Q: Which cables are in the box?
The RCA cable and a SCART adapter are included, which covers European VCRs with a SCART socket as well as decks with direct RCA outputs.
Q: Does it need a driver?
Windows asks for a capture driver on first connection. Install it once and the device then appears as a video input to any capture application you already use.
Q: Can I capture from a DVD player or a satellite box?
Yes, if the source has composite or S-Video output. The bridge does not care where the signal comes from, only that it is PAL, SECAM or NTSC.
What the parcel contains
Capture unit, RCA lead and SCART adapter in one box. If the unit does not enumerate on a supported Windows version, tell us what you see and we will replace it rather than leave you troubleshooting a driver.
