説明

Distillation is the oldest separation technique in the laboratory and still the one that punishes shortcuts. A joint that is not airtight leaks vapour, a glass that cannot take a temperature step cracks under it, and a heat source without control turns a slow separation into a scorched flask.

The Alchemist kit is built around 3.3 borosilicate glass, the grade specified for thermal shock resistance and chemical durability. Standard 24/40 ground joints are sandblasted to seat without grease where possible and are replaceable individually, so a chipped condenser does not retire the whole apparatus. The low linear expansion coefficient is what lets the glass take a hot vapour path and a cold condenser in the same run.

Heating comes from a 1000W electric plate rather than an open flame, which is safer indoors and far easier to control. The plate supports the flask, the clamps hold the glassware vertical, and the assembly runs at a steady temperature instead of cycling. Capacity options run from 500ml for bench-scale trials to 2L for batch work, which covers essential oil extraction, hydrosol production and solvent recovery.

The accessory set removes the scavenger hunt that normally follows a glassware order. Conical flasks, beakers and brushes arrive with the kit, so the first run can happen the day it lands rather than after a second order for the parts nobody remembered.

Good glassware is not the experiment. It is the reason the experiment is repeatable.

Why This Configuration Works

  • 3.3 borosilicate glass — thermal shock resistance and chemical durability for repeat runs.
  • Standard 24/40 joints — sandblasted ground joints seat tightly and are individually replaceable.
  • 1000W heating plate — controlled electric heat instead of a flame, with stable temperature.
  • 500ml to 2L capacity — bench trials through to batch extraction in one kit.
  • Clamps and support — holds the glassware vertical so the vapour path stays consistent.
  • Accessory set included — conical flasks, beakers and brushes arrive with the apparatus.
  • Modular assembly — individual glassware pieces can be swapped or replaced without rebuilding the kit.

Where it belongs

Small producers use it to run essential oil and hydrosol batches in quantities that a benchtop trial can validate before a larger still is bought. Laboratories use it for solvent recovery and teaching distillation as a technique, where replaceable joints matter because students break glassware. Herbalists and formulators use the 2L configuration for seasonal production, and the electric plate makes the kit viable in a room where a gas burner would not be permitted.

Questions Buyers Ask Before Ordering

Q: Can I use it for essential oil extraction?

A: Yes. That is the primary application, and the 2L configuration suits small batch steam and hydro distillation.

Q: Is the glass suitable for heat?

A: The kit uses 3.3 borosilicate, which is specified for thermal shock resistance. Avoid direct flame and use the supplied electric plate.

Q: Are the joints standard?

A: Yes, 24/40 ground joints. Replacement glassware in that specification will fit the kit.

Q: What is included besides the glassware?

A: A 1000W electric heating plate plus conical flasks, beakers and cleaning brushes. Confirm the exact contents on your selected variant.

Q: Do I need to grease the joints?

A: The joints are sandblasted for a dry seal. Use only a minimal amount of appropriate joint grease if a specific solvent demands it, and clean it off after the run.

Q: How should the kit be cleaned and stored?

A: Wash with appropriate solvent, rinse with distilled water, dry fully, and store the glassware supported rather than stacked.

Q: Is it a complete still or a glassware set?

A: It is a distillation apparatus with a heating plate and accessories. It is not a turnkey production still, so throughput scales with the flask you fit.

Q: How much oil does one 2L run produce?

A: Yield depends on the plant material and its oil content rather than on the flask alone. A 2L flask is sized for trials and small batch production, so expect trial-scale volumes rather than commercial output.

Q: Can the heating plate run other glassware?

A: Yes. The plate is a general 1000W laboratory hot plate and will support other flat-bottomed borosilicate vessels within its load and temperature range.

Borosilicate as described

Took it through a hot vapour path and a cold condenser in the same run with no stress cracking. Replaced a chipped condenser separately and the new piece seated perfectly, which is the whole reason standard joints matter.

Good kit for a small bench

The heating plate is the part that surprised me, it holds temperature far more steadily than the hotplate I was using. Accessories cover the basics. I would have liked a spare joint clip in the box but that is a minor point.

Joints seal properly

The 24/40 ground joints are sandblasted and seat without grease, which matters for hydrosol runs. Glass arrived intact and the clamps hold the column vertical. Ran a 2L batch of lavender without a single leak at the joint.
