Every household runs on a quiet tax paid in nine-volt cells. The smoke detector, the guitar pedal, the multimeter that only wakes up twice a year, the remote that always dies on the wrong evening. Alkaline 9V batteries are bought in packs, used once, and thrown away with most of their capacity still inside them. The Volt Keeper removes that recurring line item by putting a rechargeable lithium cell where the disposable one used to sit.

The cell is a 1200mAh lithium-ion pack in the standard 6F22 footprint, measuring 47.5 by 26 by 16.5 mm so it drops into existing battery compartments without adapters or shims. Charging happens through a USB Type-C port built into the cell itself: a five-volt input at 400mA, with a conversion efficiency between 88 and 92 percent, and an indicator that turns from red to green when the charge is complete. There is no separate charging cradle to lose.

What matters over years rather than weeks is the cycle life. This pack is rated for up to 1200 charge cycles, with low self-discharge so a cell that sits in a drawer through winter still has capacity in spring. Lithium chemistry also holds voltage under load far better than alkaline, which is why devices that used to fade gradually tend to keep working until the cell is genuinely empty. In practice, a set of four replaces hundreds of disposables.

A battery is not a consumable. It is a component, and components are meant to be kept.

Engineering Notes

  • True 1200mAh capacity — Rated capacity matches the label, so runtime in detectors and pedals is predictable.
  • USB Type-C charging on the cell — The port is built into the battery itself, with no cradle and no proprietary charger.
  • 88 to 92 percent conversion efficiency — Little energy is lost as heat during charging, so cells stay cooler and last longer.
  • Up to 1200 charge cycles — Years of use from one purchase instead of a drawer full of dead alkalines.
  • Low self-discharge — Storage between seasons does not leave a cell flat when you need it.
  • Standard 6F22 footprint — 47.5 x 26 x 16.5 mm, a direct drop-in for existing nine-volt compartments.
  • Four, six or eight cell packs — Buy the size that matches how many devices you actually maintain.

Who It Is For

The obvious use is the smoke detector on the landing, where a nine-volt cell is a safety component rather than a convenience. Beyond that, the Volt Keeper suits guitarists running battery-powered pedals who are tired of mid-set failures, technicians whose multimeters sit idle for weeks and then need to work immediately, hobbyists with RC transmitters, and households maintaining thermostats, doorbells and childrens toys that all take the same cell. Anyone who has ever bought a bulk pack of alkalines and thrown most of them away half-used is the intended owner.

Field Questions

Q: Will it fit a standard smoke detector?

Yes. The cell uses the standard 6F22 nine-volt footprint at 47.5 x 26 x 16.5 mm, so it drops into the same compartment as a disposable. Check that your detector specifies a 9V battery, not a sealed lithium pack.

Q: How do I charge it?

Plug a USB Type-C cable directly into the port on the cell. The indicator shows red while charging and green when full. Do not use a traditional nine-volt charger on this battery.

Q: Can I use it in devices that draw high current?

Lithium cells hold voltage well under load, which suits multimeters, pedals, transmitters and alarms. For devices with very high continuous draw, check the manufacturer specification first.

Q: What happens if I leave it in a device for months?

Self-discharge is low, so it will still have capacity after long storage. For devices left unused for more than six months, remove the cell as good practice.

Q: Is one pack enough for a whole house?

A four-cell pack typically covers a detector plus several small devices. The six and eight cell packs suit households with multiple detectors, instruments or RC gear.

Q: How long does a charge take?

Charging runs at 400mA through Type-C with the indicator switching to green when complete. A full charge from empty takes a few hours.

Q: How do I know when charging has finished?

The indicator on the cell shows red while current is flowing and turns green once the cell is full. Unplug at that point rather than leaving it connected indefinitely.

Q: Can I store these in a drawer through winter?

Yes. Lithium cells with low self-discharge hold their charge across months of storage. Bring them to roughly half charge before long storage and top them up before the season starts.

Eight cells replaced a whole drawer

I had a drawer of half-dead nine-volts and threw all of them out. These hold charge between seasons, which matters for the caravan alarms I only check twice a year.

Good cells, mind the charger rule

The note about not using a nine-volt charger is important, I nearly made that mistake. Charging through Type-C works perfectly. Capacity in a pedal is noticeably better than alkaline.

Fits standard detector compartments

Drop-in fit in all four of my smoke alarms. Charged them all in an evening and the green indicator is easy to read. Feels heavier and better built than a disposable cell.

Stopped buying alkalines

Bought the eight pack and put them in detectors, a multimeter and two guitar pedals. Charging by USB-C on the cell itself is the feature that sold me, no cradle to lose. Voltage holds right up under load.
