A car built in 2016 should not feel like a car built in 2016. The dashboard is the last place in modern life where software ages faster than the metal around it, and most drivers simply accept it. They should not have to. The Signal Deck is a small black box that turns a factory wired CarPlay or wired Android Auto screen into a wireless Android 13 computer, without touching the dashboard, the wiring loom, or the warranty book.

The hardware is chosen for patience rather than spectacle. A Qualcomm SM6115 processor runs the Android 13 layer while an Adreno 610 GPU handles map rendering, and the memory tier decides how much of that work happens at once: 4GB with 64GB of storage, or 8GB with 128GB for drivers who expect the app library to grow. A built-in 4G module keeps the box online without borrowing a phone hotspot, and GPS, Glonass and Beidou positioning cover the satellite constellations each region actually uses. The enclosure measures 82 by 82 by 19 millimetres and draws five watts, roughly what a phone charger wastes while idle.

Installation is the part most buyers underestimate, in a good way. The unit presses into place with screws and a buckle, connects to the factory head unit, and then behaves like the screen the car already had, only wireless and with an application store attached. Storage expands to 512GB through a card slot. Nothing is subscribed to, nothing expires, and the original steering wheel controls keep working because the original display protocol is preserved rather than replaced.

The screen was always there. What was missing was the software behind it.

Where It Belongs

The Signal Deck belongs to the driver who kept the car and lost patience with the screen. It suits a 2016 to 2021 factory head unit that shipped with wired CarPlay, a daily commute where the phone stays in a pocket, and a car that will be kept long enough that an aftermarket head unit makes no financial sense. It also suits rental and fleet vehicles where the manufacturer screen is good but the software is frozen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will it work with my car?

It requires a factory head unit that already supports wired CarPlay or wired Android Auto. If the car has a wired CarPlay cable port, this box converts that connection to wireless and adds a standalone Android layer on top.

Q: Do I need a SIM card?

No. The built-in 4G module accepts a data SIM if the driver wants the box online independently, and it also connects through a phone hotspot, which is the common case for buyers who do not want a second data plan.

Q: Will the factory camera and parking sensors still work?

Yes. The unit preserves the original display protocol instead of replacing it, so the reversing camera, parking sensors and steering wheel controls behave exactly as they did before.

Q: How long does installation take?

Between fifteen and thirty minutes for most vehicles. The unit mounts with screws and a buckle, connects to the factory head unit, and requires no cutting of the wiring loom.

Q: Does it invalidate the manufacturer warranty?

The installation is a plug-in connection to the existing head unit with no loom modification, which keeps the vehicle wiring untouched.

Q: What is the difference between the 4GB and the 8GB versions?

Both run Android 13 on the same Qualcomm SM6115 processor. The 4GB tier with 64GB of storage handles navigation, music and messaging comfortably, while the 8GB tier with 128GB storage is intended for buyers who install a larger application set and want more headroom over time.

Great after a firmware update

Initial pairing with my phone took a couple of attempts, but after updating the box firmware it connects automatically every time I start the car. Wireless Android Auto is stable and the GPS lock is fast even in the city.

The Android side is the surprise

I bought it for wireless CarPlay and ended up using the Android box more, because the streaming apps are just there without plugging anything in. Build quality is solid and it sits neatly behind the factory screen, no rattles over rough roads.

Wireless CarPlay in an older daily

Fitted this to a 2018 car with wired CarPlay and it has been flawless for two months. The phone stays in my pocket, the map loads before I leave the driveway, and the steering wheel controls still work exactly as before. Installation took about twenty minutes with a trim tool.
