Furniture assembly is a torque problem disguised as a patience problem. Too little force and the screw stops half a millimetre short; too much and a particleboard panel splits along the grain. The Pocket Torque is built for that narrow band: a 7 newton-metre driver with a 6.35mm hex holder, small enough to keep in a kitchen drawer and precise enough to stop before the material gives way.

The specification reflects the job it was designed for rather than the job a contractor would bring. No-load speed runs from 0 to 180 revolutions per minute, which is slow by drill standards and deliberate by assembly standards: slow enough to feel the fastener seat, slow to start so a bit does not walk across a lacquered surface. Input is 5 volts at a maximum of 1000 milliamps through a 0.6 metre cord, and the tool body weighs 0.36 kilograms, so overhead work does not become a shoulder exercise.

Nine screwdriver bits and a hex-sleeve extension rod ship with it, which covers the fasteners that actually appear in flat-pack furniture, cabinet hinges, shelving brackets and appliance panels. For metal, earthenware and plastic, it drives, removes and drills. What it will not do is pretend to be a hammer drill, and that honesty is why it survives in a drawer instead of a toolbox.

Precision is not a luxury. It is what keeps the panel from splitting.

Tool Features

  • ✦ 7 N.m of torque, enough for furniture, cabinetry and appliance fasteners
  • ✦ 6.35mm hex tool holder compatible with standard screwdriver bits
  • ✦ 0-180 rpm no-load speed for controlled seating rather than aggressive boring
  • ✦ 5V DC input at up to 1000mA through a 0.6 metre power cord
  • ✦ 0.36kg body that stays comfortable during overhead assembly work
  • ✦ Nine bits plus a hex-sleeve extension rod included in the kit
  • ✦ Drives, removes and drills into metal, earthenware and plastic

Typical Jobs

Flat-pack furniture assembly where a hand screwdriver leaves your wrist aching by the fourth drawer unit. Cabinet and hinge installation where the screw must stop flush instead of sinking. Appliance panel work, shelving brackets and curtain hardware. Studio and workshop benches where a full-size drill is more tool than the fastener requires. In each case the requirement is the same: controlled rotation at a low speed, in a body light enough to hold at eye level while you watch the fastener seat.

Practical Questions

Q: Is 7 N.m enough for hardwood?

It is sized for assembly fasteners, not for boring into hardwood. Driving screws into softwood, plywood, particleboard, metal sheet and plastic is within its range; drilling deep holes in dense hardwood needs a mains drill with higher torque.

Q: Does it have a clutch or torque setting?

The tool delivers a fixed 7 N.m maximum with a 0-180 rpm speed range. Control comes from feathering the trigger and stopping when the fastener seats, which is why the low speed range matters more than a clutch on a driver of this size.

Q: What bits are included?

Nine screwdriver bits and one hex-sleeve extension rod, covering the common Phillips, slot and hex fasteners found in furniture and cabinet hardware. The 6.35mm holder accepts standard bits if you need a different profile.

Q: Can it be used on earthenware or tile?

It will drill into earthenware and plastic according to the manufacturer's stated material list. Use an appropriate bit and light pressure; this is not a hammer drill and impact action will crack brittle material.

Q: Is it corded or battery powered?

It runs from a 5V input at up to 1000mA through a 0.6 metre cord. That removes battery degradation from the equation, which is why a unit like this can sit unused for a year and still work when you pick it up.

Q: How heavy is it in hand?

0.36 kilograms net, which is light enough for sustained overhead use. The trade-off is that a body this light transmits fastener resistance directly to your hand, so let the bit do the work at low speed.

Q: Does the extension rod reach recessed screws?

The hex-sleeve extension rod brings the bit out to fasteners set inside a panel or behind a bracket, which is where a bare driver cannot reach. It also keeps the tool body clear of the surface you are working against.

Lives in the kitchen drawer

Small, quiet and it starts slow so the bit does not skate across a lacquered surface. The extension rod reaches hinge screws behind a door edge, which a normal screwdriver cannot do at that angle.

Light and precise, not a drill for walls

Perfect for furniture and cabinet hinges. Do not buy it expecting to put holes in masonry, because it is a driver first. The cord is short enough that an extension lead matters if you are working across a room.

Solved the flat-pack problem

Assembled two wardrobes and a bookshelf in an evening. Seven newton metres is exactly right for particleboard: firm enough to seat the screw, gentle enough that I did not split a single panel. The nine bits covered every fastener in the boxes.
