There are two kinds of winter coats: the ones you buy because they were on sale in October, and the ones you reach for when the weather app shows a number that makes you question your life choices. The Permafrost Standard belongs unequivocally to the second category. It is not a fashion coat that happens to be warm. It is a thermal defense system that happens to look good.

The long silhouette is the first intelligent decision. Most winter coats abandon the body at the hip, creating a thermal cliff where warm meets cold in a single horizontal line. The Permafrost Standard extends coverage well below the hip, protecting the zone where body heat escapes and winter wind exploits. This is not a design flourish — it is physics, dressed in polyester and insulated with purpose.

We added The Permafrost Standard to our collection because we believe that being cold in winter is optional. It is a choice, and not one that any informed consumer should make when the alternative is a coat that treats thermal protection as a solved engineering problem rather than a seasonal guessing game.

Being cold is a choice. The Permafrost Standard is the alternative.

Application Scenarios

The Permafrost Standard is engineered for temperatures where most winter coats give up. It serves the woman who walks to work through actual winter — not the version that happens in Southern California — and needs her coat to perform rather than pose. The extended length means it covers office attire completely, eliminating the awkward gap where a blazer or dress hem peeks out beneath a too-short coat. It's equally effective for weekend errands, winter travel, outdoor events, and any scenario where being cold would ruin the experience. The generous cut accommodates heavy sweaters without binding, so you can layer strategically as conditions demand.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the temperature rating for this parka?

A: The Permafrost Standard is designed for sub-freezing winter conditions. The thick thermal insulation, extended length, and wind-resistant shell work in combination to provide reliable warmth in temperatures well below 0°C / 32°F when worn with appropriate base layers.

Q: Is this parka waterproof or water-resistant?

A: The outer shell is water-resistant and will handle light snow and drizzle. For sustained heavy rain, we recommend an additional waterproof shell layer. The insulation retains warmth even when the outer fabric is damp.

Q: Can I machine wash this parka?

A: We recommend professional cleaning for best results. If machine washing, use a front-loading machine on gentle cycle with cold water and mild detergent, then tumble dry on low with dryer balls to restore loft. Always check the care label for specific instructions.

Q: Is the hood removable?

A: The hood is fixed (non-removable) for structural integrity in windy conditions. Removable hoods tend to create weak points where cold air can penetrate. The fixed design ensures consistent thermal protection.

Q: How heavy is the parka?

A: The Permafrost Standard has noticeable weight due to its thick insulation and extended length — this is the trade-off for serious winter protection. The weight distributes evenly across the shoulders and does not feel burdensome during normal wear.

My daughter stole it — ordering another

Bought this for myself. My teenage daughter 'borrowed' it for a winter field trip and now it's hers. Ordering a second one. That should tell you everything you need to know about how good this coat looks on.

Excellent warmth, zipper could be smoother

The thermal performance is outstanding — I walk my dog every morning in Minnesota and this coat is the only reason I don't dread it. The zipper snags occasionally which is the only reason for 4 stars instead of 5. Still, incredible value.

Warm without being bulky like a sleeping bag

I was worried this would be one of those coats that makes you look like a giant marshmallow. It's warm — genuinely warm — but the cut is flattering. The hood stays up in wind, the pockets are deep, and I can actually move my arms.

Survived a Chicago winter — this coat is no joke

Moved to Chicago and my old coat was useless by December. This parka handled -15°F wind chill without me feeling it. The long cut actually covers your thighs which makes a huge difference. Best winter purchase I've made in years.
