The sound a car door makes when it meets a concrete pillar is not loud. It is a short, flat, expensive sound, followed by a silence in which the driver calculates the cost of a paint repair. The U-profile guard exists to replace that sound with nothing at all: a rubber channel that clips over the trailing edge of the door, absorbs the contact and takes the scuff instead of the paintwork.

This is a five metre roll of U-section rubber with an internal steel spring, sized to grip a door edge of roughly half a centimetre and hold through car washes, sun exposure and the repeated slamming that a family vehicle absorbs. The rubber is EPDM-type compound rather than a cheap vinyl, which is the difference between a guard that stays soft for years and one that hardens, shrinks and falls off within a summer. The colour runs through the material, so a scuff shows as a scuff rather than as a bright white scar.

Five metres covers four doors with enough left to do the boot lid edge or the leading edge of a bonnet. Installation requires no tools beyond scissors and a clean surface: warm the rubber slightly so it takes the curve, press the channel over the edge, and work along the door in one continuous pass. The adhesive promoter pad is worth using at the corners, which is where these guards actually fail.

The best bodywork is the repair you never had to schedule.

What You Are Actually Buying

✦  U-profile with internal spring: grips a 5mm door edge and stays put through slamming and car washes.

✦  EPDM-type rubber compound that stays soft instead of hardening and shrinking like cheap vinyl.

✦  Colour runs through the material, so a scuff does not show as a white scar.

✦  Five metre roll covers four doors with spare for a boot lid or bonnet leading edge.

✦  Takes the contact and the abrasion instead of the paint, at the exact point doors hit walls.

✦  Installs with scissors and a clean surface, no drilling and no fasteners.

✦  Available in blue and red for buyers who want the guard to read as a deliberate styling line.

Where This Belongs

Owners of older vehicles use it to stop an existing paint chip from spreading and to hide the damage already there. Families with children use it because the rear door is the one that gets opened into a wall in a car park. Fleet and pool car managers run it along every door as cheap insurance against the repair charge that comes out of a driver's deposit. Delivery and trade vehicles use the spare length on the boot lid and the leading edge of the bonnet, which take the same kind of contact. Body shops fit it after a respray as a routine finishing step, because a freshly painted edge is the most expensive possible place to take a knock.

Questions Worth Asking

Will it fit my car door?

The channel grips an edge of roughly 5mm thickness, which covers the door edge on the large majority of cars. Measure the edge thickness at the trailing corner before ordering; a door with a thick factory seal or a rolled edge may need a wider profile.

Does it need adhesive?

No. The internal spring holds the channel over the edge. Use the supplied promoter pad or a small amount of adhesive at the corners, which is the only place the guard tends to lift on a curved edge.

Will it damage the paint underneath?

The rubber sits over the paint and does not abrade it in normal use. Remove it before selling the car and clean the adhesive residue at the corners with isopropyl alcohol; the paint underneath is typically in better condition than the rest of the edge.

How much does one roll cover?

Five metres. Four door edges on a saloon typically consume around 4.2 to 4.6 metres, leaving enough for a boot lid edge. Measure each edge before cutting, and cut slightly long rather than short.

Does the colour fade in sunlight?

The colour is through the material rather than applied to the surface, so it does not flake off. Prolonged direct sun will soften any rubber over years; a UV dressing once a season keeps it black or blue for longer.

Can I use it on a boot lid or bonnet?

Yes, and it is worth doing with the spare length. The leading edge of a bonnet and the trailing edge of a boot lid take stone chips and loading damage that cost far more to repaint than the guard costs to fit.

Good guard, warm it first

Does the job well and grips hard. In cold weather it helps to warm the rubber before working around a curve, otherwise it wants to fight you at the corner.

Colour is through the rubber

The blue is through the material, not painted on, so a scuff does not show as a white scar. Still looks deliberate after a winter of road salt.

Five metres was enough

Four saloon doors plus the boot lid edge with a little left over. Cut slightly long and work in one pass along the door, it seats better than pressing it in sections.

Rear door, car park wall

Fitted this to all four doors after my daughter opened one into a concrete pillar. Six months later the rubber has taken every scuff and the paint underneath is untouched. The spring core means it has not shifted at the corners.
