Every backup power system has one moment that matters: the instant the mains fails and something has to decide, without a person present, where the building's electricity will come from next. Generators, inverters and battery banks can all be sized generously. If the switch between them is slow, uncertain or manual, the whole installation is only as reliable as whoever happens to be standing near the panel.

The Grid Arbiter is a dual power automatic transfer switch rated to 250 A or 300 A across four poles, built for AC 220 V single-phase and three-phase control boards, diesel generator sets and hybrid supply installations. When the primary source falls outside its acceptable window the controller transfers the load to the standby source, and when the primary returns it transfers back, which is the difference between a backup system and an extension cord that has to be plugged in.

Four poles matter more often than buyers expect. Three-phase loads carried on three poles plus a neutral conductor need a fourth pole to switch the return path, and installations where the neutral is left permanently connected create an unsafe path back through a supposedly isolated supply. The SKT1 series offers both 250 A and 300 A frames in the same footprint, with the pole configuration fixed at four, so a panel designed for the smaller frame can be upgraded in capacity without changing the busbar geometry.

Backup power is not the generator. It is the two seconds between the lights going out and coming back on.

Why It Earns Its Place

  • Dual power automatic transfer between primary and standby supply
  • Rated at 250 A and 300 A frame options in the SKT1 series
  • Four-pole configuration switching three phases plus the neutral return
  • Designed for AC 220 V single-phase and three-phase control boards
  • Suitable for diesel generator sets, inverters and battery backups
  • Automatic transfer to the standby source when the primary fails
  • Automatic return to the primary source once it is stable again
  • Mechanical interlock preventing both sources being paralleled
  • Panel-mount format for control cabinets and distribution boards
  • Suited to workshops, farms, telecoms shelters and residential backup
  • Available in 250 A and 300 A models, SKT1-250/4P and SKT1-300/4P
  • Regional variants available with the plug and standard for the destination

Where It Belongs

This switch is the component that turns a generator or inverter into a system. A farm or small workshop with a standby generator needs the load to move automatically when the grid drops, because the outage usually happens at night and the person who would have thrown a manual breaker is asleep. A telecoms shelter, cold store or water pumping station cannot tolerate a supply gap long enough for someone to drive to site. A residential or small commercial installation with a battery inverter wants a return path that is switched rather than permanently connected, which is what the fourth pole provides. A mobile or export installation needs the frame and pole configuration to match an existing panel rather than the other way round, and the SKT1 series shares its footprint across both current ratings for that reason.

Support That Answers

Every unit is checked before dispatch and shipped from the regional warehouse you select at checkout. Before purchase and after it, questions are answered by the same team that listed the product, not by a script.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What does a four-pole switch do that a three-pole does not?

A: The fourth pole switches the neutral conductor. In installations where the neutral is left connected through both sources, current can find a path back through equipment that is supposed to be isolated. Switching all four conductors keeps the two supplies genuinely separate.

Q: How do I choose between 250 A and 300 A?

A: Size to the maximum continuous current of the installation with margin for future load, and confirm the frame fits the panel cut-out and busbar arrangement. Both models share the SKT1 footprint, so the 250 A frame covers most single-building backup systems and the 300 A frame suits heavier loads or planned expansion.

Q: Will it work with a diesel generator set?

A: Yes, and that is one of its primary applications. The switch is designed for AC 220 V control boards and generator-set installations, transferring the load to the generator when the mains fails and returning it to the mains once the supply is stable, which also allows a generator to be run for exercise without manual intervention.

Q: Does it transfer back automatically?

A: Yes. Automatic transfer switches work in both directions: to the standby source on failure of the primary, and back to the primary once it has returned and settled. The delay on return is intentional, since a supply that flickers twice in a minute should not be followed twice by the load.

Q: Can both sources ever be connected at once?

A: No. The switch operates as a changeover device with a mechanical interlock, so the load is connected to one source at a time. Paralleling two unsynchronised supplies would be a fault condition, and the interlock is what prevents it.

Q: Can it be used with a battery inverter rather than a generator?

A: Yes. The switch is indifferent to what generates the standby supply, so an inverter and battery bank is handled the same way as a generator set. The wiring must follow the panel design and local electrical code, and protection devices remain the responsibility of the installation.

Q: What arrives in the shipment?

A: The switch unit with terminal hardware, in the current rating and pole configuration selected at checkout. Regional variants are offered where the destination standard differs, and buyers should confirm the model number against the panel drawing before installation.

Measure Your Panel Cut-Out First

The unit itself has been reliable through several months of test transfers. My only advice is to check the cut-out and busbar arrangement before ordering, because I had to rework the mounting plate. Buyers doing an upgrade in an existing cabinet should plan that part properly.

The Fourth Pole Was The Reason I Bought It

My old changeover left the neutral connected through both supplies, which I never liked. Switching all four conductors was the requirement, and this frame gave me that at a sensible price. Terminals were substantial and the panel fit was straightforward.

The Generator Takes Over And Nobody Wakes Up

Installed it between the grid supply and a standby generator on a smallholding. When the mains dropped at two in the morning the load moved over on its own and the freezers kept running. That is the entire reason for the part, and it does it without anyone walking to the panel.
