Half the cost of a printer rebuild is the computer nobody budgets for.

When a 3D printer is upgraded to Klipper, the controller board is only half the purchase. The other half is a single-board computer to host the firmware, and the price of a Raspberry Pi Compute Module has spent the last several years swinging between scarce and expensive. The CB1 Carrier exists because that second purchase does not have to be a Raspberry Pi at all.

It is an adapter board that accepts the BIGTREETECH CB1 core module and presents it to printer motherboards in the familiar Compute Module form factor. That means a CB1 can drop into the socket on an Octopus or an SKR Mini E3 v3.0 and be treated by the board as though it were the module the socket was designed for. The adapter adds the connectors the printer build actually needs: network, USB and display headers, brought out to accessible positions on the board edge.

The practical effect is a lower bill of materials for a Klipper conversion. The CB1 module is a capable Linux host for Klipper, running the same firmware stack and the same configuration workflow. It handles input shaping calculations, a camera stream if you want one, and Moonraker or Fluidd without strain. What it does not do is carry the Compute Module price premium, or the availability problem that comes with it.

The adapter also makes a good spare. Keeping a second host module on the shelf means a failed compute module is a ten-minute swap rather than a stalled print farm and a two-week wait for stock.

The firmware does not care whose name is on the processor. The bill does.

Key Features

  • ✦ Compute Module Form Factor
Presents the CB1 module to motherboards that expect a standard Compute Module socket.
  • ✦ Octopus and SKR Mini E3 v3.0 Support
Fits the BIGTREETECH controller boards most commonly used in Klipper builds.
  • ✦ Network Connectivity Broken Out
Ethernet is brought to an accessible connector so the printer can live on the network.
  • ✦ USB Ports Brought to the Edge
USB access is relocated to the board edge instead of buried between stacked boards.
  • ✦ Display Header Support
Display connectors are carried through for KlipperScreen and touch panel builds.
  • ✦ Lower Cost Host Option
Replaces an expensive or scarce Compute Module with a module at a fraction of the price.
  • ✦ Spare Host Ready
A second module on the shelf turns a compute failure into a quick swap.

Where It Belongs

The CB1 Carrier suits anyone converting a printer to Klipper who has already chosen a BIGTREETECH motherboard and does not want to pay Compute Module prices for the host. That covers a Voron or RatRig build where the controller is an Octopus, a stock printer upgraded with an SKR Mini E3 v3.0, and a small print farm standardising on identical control stacks so that spares are interchangeable. It is also a practical purchase for a farm operator who has been burned by supply shortages and wants a spare host module on the shelf, ready to swap in the moment a compute module fails.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What exactly does this adapter do?

A: It lets a BIGTREETECH CB1 core module sit in a Compute Module socket and adds the network, USB and display connectors the printer build expects, so the CB1 can serve as the Klipper host.

Q: Which printer boards does it fit?

A: It is designed for CM4-socket BIGTREETECH boards, including the Octopus series and the SKR Mini E3 v3.0, which are among the most common Klipper controllers.

Q: Do I still need a Raspberry Pi?

A: No. The CB1 module acts as the Linux host that runs Klipper, Moonraker and the web interface, so a separate Raspberry Pi is not required.

Q: Is performance adequate for Klipper?

A: The CB1 handles the host-side workload of a Klipper installation, including input shaping calculations and web interface hosting, without difficulty.

Q: Can I keep a spare module on hand?

A: That is one of the practical advantages. A second CB1 module makes a failed host a quick swap instead of a supply-chain delay.

Q: Does it work with KlipperScreen?

A: Display headers are carried through so touch panel builds can be connected, subject to your display's interface requirements.

Works well, planning takes a little care

Check your display interface before ordering if you want KlipperScreen. Once it was wired up it has been completely stable.

Saved me the cost of a compute module

I had already bought an Octopus board and did not want to pay for a CM4 on top. This adapter does the job and the USB ports are actually reachable now.

Cheaper than a Raspberry Pi and works the same

Running Klipper with Fluidd on the CB1 and it has not missed a beat. Having the network port brought out to the board edge made the enclosure tidy.
