Description

A field radio setup fails for unglamorous reasons. Not usually a broken transceiver, but a power lead pulled out of a connector block, a fuse that was rated for the whole rig instead of for one radio, or a distribution point that was never designed to be looked at twice. The Nine-Way is built for the second visit.

It takes one input at up to 40 amps and splits it into eight fused outputs, each with its own fault indicator LED so a blown fuse can be identified without pulling connectors. Fuse values are distributed to match real loads: two at 30 amps, two at 20, two at 10, one at 5 and one at 3, all in easily replaced ATC and ATO automotive fuses available in any garage, in values from 1 to 40 amps.

The enclosure is 1.5 mm aluminium, 160 x 50 x 20 mm, which is rigid enough to bolt to a vehicle panel or a field box without flexing at the mounting points. Anderson Powerpole connectors carry the current and stay seated under vibration, and the operating range of 0 to 32 volts direct current covers every lead acid, lithium and bench supply arrangement a station is likely to use. Net weight is 150 grams, with power provided by the supply being distributed.

The kit arrives with nine black and nine red Powerpole housings, flame retardant PVC sleeves, and silver plated copper contacts rated for 30 amps plus two tinned copper contacts rated for 45 amps to terminate the heavier leads.

The radio is rarely the weak point. The block you bolted it to usually is.

Where It Belongs

Amateur radio operators use it as the distribution point in a go-box or field day setup where several transceivers, a tuner and a lighting strip all run from one battery. Emergency communications teams favour it because each radio sits behind its own fuse and its own fault LED, so a single failure does not take the station off air. Vehicle-based installs use the aluminium enclosure bolted to a panel for lighting and accessory circuits, and solar hobbyists use it to distribute a battery bank across separate fused loads.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What connectors does it use?

Anderson Powerpole throughout. The kit includes nine black and nine red housings with matching silver plated 30A contacts, plus two heavier tinned copper contacts rated to 45A for the main input lead.

Q: Are fuses included?

Fuse holders are fitted and replaceable from outside the enclosure. Check the listing bundle you select, and stock ATC or ATO automotive fuses in the values you need, available in any motor factor.

Q: Can I run a 100W transceiver from one output?

Yes. A 100W HF transceiver typically draws well under 25A on transmit, so a 30A output channel is appropriate. Keep the heaviest load on its own fused output rather than sharing.

Q: Is it suitable for a 24V system?

It operates from 0 to 32V direct current, so it suits 12V and 24V systems and bench supplies within that range.

Q: How is the unit mounted?

The aluminium enclosure has a flat base suited to bolting to a vehicle panel, a field box or an equipment shelf. It does not flex at the mounting points.

Q: Does it boost or regulate voltage?

No. It distributes the supply it is given and does not convert voltage. Input and output voltage are the same, less the small drop across the fuse.

Clean installation in the go box

One input from the battery, eight fused outputs to the radios. Tidier than the terminal blocks and blade fuse holders I was using.

Check your fuse assortment

The board is well made and the aluminium does not flex when bolted down. Fuse values are fixed per output, so buy a mixed pack of ATC fuses to suit your loads.

Powerpole contacts seat properly

Housings and contacts included, and the connectors lock together under vibration. No more wiggling leads on the drive to a summit.

Everything behind its own fuse now

Field day setup with three radios, a tuner and lighting. Previously one fuse for the lot. Now each output is protected and the fault LED tells me instantly which one has gone.
