Description

Most network faults are not mysterious. They are a miswired pair behind a patch panel, a run that measures four metres longer than the plan says, or a coax drop that reads continuity on one conductor and nothing on the other. Finding them is a measurement problem, and measurement problems want an instrument rather than a hunch. The NF-8108M from NOYAFA is a handheld tester built to answer three questions on site: how long is this run, is it wired correctly, and where does it fail.

The transmitter measures cable length and reports the distance to an open or a short, which turns a vague intermittent fault into a number you can act on. Wiring errors in Cat5e, Cat6 and coaxial cable show up as open circuit, short circuit, crossed pair or reversed connection on a 53 by 25 millimetre LCD that stays readable in a dim riser cupboard. Cable mapping works out to 300 metres, comfortably beyond the 100 metre channel limit of copper Ethernet, so a run that reads out of range is a run with a physical problem rather than a patch cord problem.

Eight remote identifiers come in the box, which is the detail that separates a tester you carry for one job from a tester you carry every week. With eight remotes on eight runs, one person at the patch panel can identify and verify the whole bundle without a second technician walking between rooms. Protection is rated to AC 60V and DC 42V, so a live PoE port is survivable rather than terminal, and the automatic time delay shutoff plus self-checking routine keep the readings honest as battery capacity drops or the ambient temperature shifts. Four AA cells deliver a claimed standby window of around fifty hours.

A cable either measures right or it does not. The instrument exists so you stop guessing which.

What Sets It Apart

  • Length measurement with fault distance
Reports total run length and the distance to an open or short, which is the fastest way to locate a break inside a wall or a ceiling void.
  • Cat5e, Cat6 and coax in one meter
Wiring error detection covers open, short, crossed pair and reverse connection across the copper types installers actually terminate.
  • 300 metre cable mapping range
Three times the 100 metre Ethernet channel limit, so out-of-range readings point at physical damage rather than a marginal patch lead.
  • Eight remote identifiers included
Terminate eight runs, then test and label them from one end without a helper shuttling between rooms.
  • Voltage protection to AC 60V and DC 42V
Survives contact with live PoE and telephony lines during discovery work in occupied buildings.
  • Self-checking with 50 hour standby
Auto compensation for battery capacity and temperature drift, plus automatic shutoff so the meter is not dead when the job starts.

Where It Belongs

This belongs in the tool bag of anyone who terminates cable for a living. Structured cabling installers use it to sign off a bundle before the ceiling goes back up. IT teams running their own office moves use it to prove a run is bad before ordering a contractor. Low voltage technicians working CCTV and access control use the coax and pair testing functions on the same visit. It is also the right tool for the awkward job where a cable was pulled years ago, nothing is labelled, and the only way to work out what is in the wall is to put a signal on it and listen at the far end.

Questions Buyers Ask Before Ordering

Q: Does it measure the distance to a break inside a wall?

Yes. The transmitter measures total cable length and reports the distance to an open or short circuit, which is how you narrow a fault to a section of the run instead of replacing the whole drop.

Q: Are the eight remote identifiers included?

They ship with the meter. Eight remotes let one technician terminate and identify eight separate runs from a single location, which is the usual reason a tester ends up being carried every day.

Q: Will it survive contact with a live PoE port?

Voltage protection is rated to AC 60V and DC 42V. That covers accidental contact with PoE and telephony lines, though it is protection rather than a licence to test live circuits as a routine.

Q: Does it come with batteries?

No. The unit takes four 1.5V AA cells, which are not included, so plan on having them on hand for the first job.

Q: Can it test coaxial cable as well as Ethernet?

Yes. The tester covers RJ45 network runs, Cat5e and Cat6 wiring, and coaxial cable, including open, short, crossed pair and reverse connection faults.

Q: What is the maximum length it can map?

Cable mapping works to 300 metres. Standard copper Ethernet channels stop at 100 metres, so anything reading beyond that points to a physical fault worth investigating.

Solid meter, bring your own batteries

Does everything the listing says on Cat6 and coax. Docked a star only because it ships without the four AA cells, so my first job started with a trip to a shop.

The eight remotes are the point

Terminated eight runs in a comms cabinet and identified all of them from one end without walking the floor. Screen is readable in a dim riser. Tone is loud enough to hear through a ceiling void.

Found the break in twenty minutes

Used it on a dead run in an office fit-out. It measured the length and gave me the distance to the open, which put the fault right at a staple the previous installer had shot through the cable. Would have been an afternoon of guessing otherwise.
