Description

Costume that photographs like couture is rare. The Masquerade is a lace up Victorian revival gown with a ruffled bow bodice, a cinched high waist and a long flared skirt, built for carnival nights, masquerade balls, theatre performances and the kind of party where everyone has clearly dressed for it.

The construction leans on contrast: a lace front panel that laces tight through the bodice, a bow trimmed bustline, and a skirt that widens from the waist into a soft A line. The fabric blend of polyester and chiffon keeps the weight at roughly 680 grams so the gown moves with the body instead of standing away from it, and the elasticated back panel supports a range of bust measurements across the size run. The dress is sleeveless with a fitted shoulder line, which leaves room for gloves, a cape or a corset accessory if you want to push the silhouette further.

Sizes run from S through 5XL with bust measurements from 95 to 130 centimetres, and the colourways include green, purple, dark blue and hot pink. Because the lace through the bodice is decorative rather than load bearing, the gown is comfortable enough for a full evening of standing, dancing and photographs. Measurement tables are listed in the specifications above; measure the bust at the fullest point and match to chart rather than guessing from your usual size.

The gown is produced in a single run per colourway, which matters when you are dressing a group, a theatre cast or a party of friends: every piece in the same colour arrives from the same dye batch, so the skirts match under stage lighting. Colourways lean rich rather than pastel, which is deliberate. Deep green, purple, dark blue and hot pink hold their depth in low light and separate cleanly from a black backdrop, the two conditions most costume photography runs into.

Dress like the evening is a performance, because it is.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does the lace up front actually tighten the dress?

The bodice lacing is decorative and adjustable in appearance. The fit is set by the size you choose, so match your bust measurement to the chart above.

Q: Is the gown see through?

The bodice is lined through the bust area. The skirt is a layered chiffon and polyester construction with normal moderate opacity for a costume gown.

Q: Can I wear this to a Renaissance fair?

Yes. The lace up front, high waist and flared skirt come straight from Victorian and Renaissance revival styling and read clearly in costume contexts.

Q: How should I clean it?

Hand wash in cold water with a mild detergent, do not wring, and drip dry away from direct heat. Steam rather than iron to protect the lace.

Q: Do the sizes run true?

The chart above lists actual bust measurements from 95 to 130 cm. Measure at the fullest point and choose the closest size. If between sizes, take the larger for a relaxed fit.

Q: Does it come with the accessories in the photos?

The listing is for the gown. Gloves, headwear and jewellery shown in styling images are not included.

Q: Will the colours look the same as the photos?

Screens vary, and chiffon shifts tone under different light. The colourways are deep and saturated in person, which is intentional for stage and evening wear.

Q: Can I wear a petticoat underneath for extra volume?

Yes. The skirt is cut with enough fabric to layer a light petticoat if you want a fuller carnival silhouette, though the gown holds its A line shape without one.

Give yourself time to lace it before the event

The bow trimmed bustline and the high waist give it the Victorian shape straight out of the bag, and the chiffon blend holds a press from a steamer far better than I expected after a journey folded in a suitcase. The lacing takes a few minutes and you want a second pair of hands to get the tension even, because uneven lacing is visible in the back of the dress in photographs. Once it is done, it stays put for the whole night.

Photographs like something two hundred pounds more expensive

I wore this to a masquerade ball and the lace panel across the bodice is what sells it in photographs, because the lace-up back cinches the waist in properly instead of relying on a hidden zip. The skirt falls from the waist into a real A line, so it moves when you walk rather than tenting out, and at around 680 grams it is light enough to wear through a long evening without wanting to take it off. Two people asked which atelier it came from.

Lovely gown, measure before ordering

I took my bust measurement instead of guessing and the L fitted well. The skirt is light, so add a petticoat if you want the fuller carnival bell shape.

Bought five for a theatre cast

All five arrived from the same dye batch, so the skirts matched exactly under stage lighting. The high waist seam helped the shorter members of the cast keep the proportions.

Photographed beautifully at the ball

Wore the purple to a carnival night and the lace up bodice drew comments all evening. The elastic back panel let me move and dance without the bodice digging in anywhere.
