Description

Light is the cheapest form of stagecraft and the easiest to get wrong. A flat wash makes a room bright. A moving beam makes a room feel like something is about to happen. The difference is not wattage, it is direction, and direction is the one thing a fixed par can never deliver.

The Beamwright Duo ships as a matched pair of 30W moving heads, each carrying a 4 in 1 RGBW LED source that produces red, green, blue and white beams simultaneously rather than cycling through them one colour at a time. Pan runs a full 360 degrees, tilt runs 180, and the pair can be set to mirror, oppose or chase each other across a floor or wall. Control is deliberately generous: auto run for the operator who wants to plug in and walk away, sound active for a small bar, master and slave for a two-unit rig, DMX512 with 10 channels and RDM for anything that deserves a console, plus a 433MHz remote with a working range of three to eight metres for the person who just wants the lights to move without learning a desk.

The housing is plastic over metal components at 0.65kg per unit, which is light enough to clamp onto a truss with a single hand and light enough that a pair travels in a backpack. The four digit display makes addressing readable in a dark booth, the three pin XLR input and output let the units daisy chain, and IP20 rating is an honest statement that these belong indoors, away from rain and spilled drinks. For a mobile DJ, a small venue, a wedding hall or a KTV room, this is the shortest line between a bare room and a lit one.

Nobody remembers the fixture. They remember the room going dark and then not being dark anymore.

Where It Belongs

Mobile DJs carry a pair because two heads cover a small floor and still fit beside a laptop in the car. Bars and KTV rooms mount them on a wall bracket where a wash light would only brighten the ceiling. Wedding planners use them to cut beams through haze during the first dance and then drop to a slow ambient sweep for dinner. Rehearsal studios and small theatres use the DMX and RDM pair to build cue stacks that behave the same way every night, which is the difference between a lighting rig and a gamble.

Questions Buyers Ask

Q: Do I need a DMX console to use these?

No. Auto run and sound active modes work with nothing attached. The remote handles basic colour and movement changes. DMX512 with RDM becomes useful once you want repeatable cue sequences.

Q: Can the two units be linked together?

Yes. Three pin XLR input and output let you daisy chain them, and the master slave mode keeps the second unit following the first without separate programming.

Q: Are they loud in operation?

The cooling and motor noise sit below typical bar ambience. In a silent listening room you will hear the pan motor during fast movements, which is normal for a moving head at this size.

Q: Can these be used outdoors?

IP20 means indoor use only. A covered patio is acceptable if no rain or heavy condensation reaches the fixture, but these are not an outdoor-rated product.

Q: What is the difference between this and a fixed par can?

A par washes an area in one direction. A moving head aims the beam wherever you send it, which is what creates movement, sweep and geometry on a wall or floor.

Q: How much floor does a pair actually cover?

At three to five metres of projection distance a pair comfortably covers a small dance floor or a wall of roughly four to six metres. Larger rooms want four units.

DMX addressing is straightforward

Set both units up on 10 channels in about fifteen minutes and they have held the address across several gigs. The digital display is readable in a dark booth, which is more than I can say for my last pair.

Great for the price, remote is basic

Used them for a wedding reception and the sweep across the back wall looked genuinely professional. The remote does what it says, but if you want proper cue sequences you will want to run them on DMX.

Lit up a 60 seat bar with one pair

I do mobile DJ work and wanted moving heads that fit in the car. These two cover a small floor easily and the sound active mode saved me bringing a console for a low key gig. Beam is sharp for a 30W unit.
