Description

A wheelset is the only part of a bicycle that touches the road and the rider at the same time. Frame and groupset decide how a bike feels under load, but wheels decide how it answers. Change the wheels and the same frame becomes a different machine: livelier climbing, calmer descending, less fatigue in the last hour of a long ride.

The SLR Disc from ELITEWHEELS is built on that premise. Rims are full carbon fiber in a 700c clincher tubeless format, finished UD matte with black gloss decals that read as texture rather than advertising. Six depths from 30mm through 82mm cover the honest range of use, from a climbing wheel that spins up quickly to a deep section that holds shape in a crosswind. The rim bed is tubeless-ready, which is the difference between finishing a ride on a puncture and standing at the roadside with a tyre lever.

The engagement story lives in the hub. A ratchet system with 36 teeth replaces the pawl arrangement found on cheaper wheels, spreading load across a wider contact surface and shortening the dead zone between pedal strokes. Spokes are Pillar 1423 in a 24 front and 24 rear build, laced to take disc brake torque without the flex that makes a front end feel vague under hard braking. Because the brake track is gone, rim weight is not carrying a heat-resistant surface it no longer needs.

Warranty is 1000 days, which is an unusually long statement for a component that takes this much abuse. Depth, hub standard and freehub body are all selected at order time, so the wheelset arrives matched to the frame rather than adapted to it afterwards.

Speed is not bought. It is transferred, one contact patch at a time.

The engineering that shows up on the road

✦ Full carbon construction. Rim and structure are carbon fiber rather than an alloy rim with a cosmetic fairing, so the weight saving is real and the ride quality follows it.

✦ Six rim depths. 30, 38, 50, 55, 60 and 82mm options let one platform serve a climbing build, an all-round bike and a time trial setup without changing supplier.

✦ Tubeless clincher bed. The rim is designed for tubeless tyres, allowing lower pressures, better grip on rough tarmac and self-sealing of small punctures.

✦ 36T ratchet hub. Wider engagement contact than a pawl hub, with faster pickup when you put power down out of a corner.

✦ Disc brake native. No rim brake track means no heat-limited braking surface, which suits long alpine descents and wet weather riding.

✦ Pillar 1423 spokes. A proven straight-pull profile in a 24F/24R build that balances lateral stiffness against compliance.

✦ 1000 day warranty. Coverage measured in years rather than months, backed by a brand that has supplied carbon wheels long enough to have a service history.

Who builds with these

The road rider replacing a heavy OEM wheelset is the obvious buyer, and the 38mm or 50mm depth is the sane answer for mixed terrain and changing winds. The criterium racer goes deeper, accepting that a 60mm section costs something in a gust and pays it back in the final lap. Cyclocross and light gravel riders choose shallow and accept narrower tyre clearance, because a 28mm internal width still takes a sensible volume. Bike shops and frame builders use the platform as a build kit, ordering depth and freehub to match the groupset on the bench rather than stocking six separate SKUs. What none of them should expect is a wheel that behaves identically across all six depths: the deeper the rim, the more the rider has to steer it deliberately in a crosswind.

Before you order

Q. Is this wheelset actually tubeless ready?

Yes. The rim bed is designed for tubeless tyres and the wheelset ships in a clincher tubeless configuration. You will still need sealant and valves, and the tyre must be a tubeless-compatible model.

Q. Which depth should I choose?

30 to 38mm for climbing and all-day comfort, 50mm as the all-round compromise, 55 to 60mm for flat and rolling speed, 82mm for time trial and track-style efforts. Deeper rims are faster above roughly 30 km/h and heavier to accelerate.

Q. What freehub options are available?

The wheelset is ordered with the freehub standard that matches your groupset. Confirm Shimano, SRAM XDR or Campagnolo at the point of order so the hub arrives correct rather than adapted.

Q. Will these fit my frame?

The build uses 24 spokes with a disc brake hub and standard thru-axle fitment. Check your frame and fork spacing and axle standard before ordering, because a wheelset cannot be re-spaced like a steel frame.

Q. How much does a wheelset like this actually save?

The meaningful saving is rotational mass and rim stiffness rather than a single gram figure. Riders usually notice faster acceleration and a calmer front end before they notice the number on a scale.

Q. What does the warranty cover?

1000 days against manufacturing defects in the rim and hub structure. Crash damage, worn bearings and normal brake wear are not manufacturing defects, and consumables are serviceable rather than covered.

Sourcing note. Each wheelset is ordered against a specific depth, hub standard and freehub body, and the configuration is confirmed against the bike it is going on before dispatch. If a depth or freehub choice conflicts with your frame or groupset, our team raises the question before the order ships rather than after the box is open.

Tubeless setup was straightforward

Bead seated on the first attempt with a track pump and sealant, no compressor needed. Ran 70 psi for a week of mixed tarmac and light gravel with no burping.

Tested on 60mm depth in wind

Ordered the 55mm and ride them on mostly flat roads. Fast above 30 km/h, but you feel the front in a crosswind and have to steer deliberately. Be honest with yourself about the depth before ordering.

Noticeably stiffer than the OEM wheels

Swapped these onto a steel road frame and the difference showed up in the first climb: the rear tracks straight under power instead of flexing. Hubs engage fast with the 36T ratchet, no delay when I stand on the pedals out of a corner.
