Description

A Keyboard Is the Most Intimate Interface Between Thought and Machine.

Before code is written, before prose is drafted, before commands are issued — there is touch. The fingertip on a keycap is the first physical transaction in every act of digital creation. And yet the factory keycaps shipped with most mechanical keyboards are an afterthought: thin-walled ABS plastic that develops a glossy shine within months, pad-printed legends that fade to ghosts within a year, and a US-English layout that ignores the ergonomic reality of European typists. The Lexicon addresses all three failures simultaneously — 133 keys of 1.5 mm thick dye-sublimated PBT, with full German QWERTZ and French AZERTY legend sets, in the classic 9009 retro colorway that has defined enthusiast-grade keyboard aesthetics for a decade.

PBT (polybutylene terephthalate) is the professional's choice for a reason that ABS cannot replicate: it does not shine. ABS keycaps develop a polished, oily-looking surface after 3-6 months of daily use because the plastic literally wears smooth. PBT is harder, more chemically resistant, and maintains its matte texture for years. The dye-sublimation process bonds the legend pigment into the plastic at a molecular level — unlike laser etching (which can feel textured) or pad printing (which wears off), dye-sub legends cannot physically separate from the keycap because they are the keycap. The 9009 color scheme — beige alphas with grey modifiers and subtle accent keys — draws from the Cherry G80-9009, arguably the most iconic keyboard of the late 1980s, updated with a modern Mac-style legend font that balances nostalgia with legibility.

The 133-key count is not arbitrary. It covers full-size (104-key) ANSI/ISO layouts, includes split-spacebar support, 1.75U Right Shift compatibility for 65% and 75% boards, stepped Caps Lock, and both Mac and Windows modifier legends. The German QWERTZ set provides proper Umlaut characters (Ä, Ö, Ü) and the sharp S (ß) in their correct positions; the AZERTY set delivers accented French characters (é, è, ê, ç, à) with the inverted A/Q and Z/W positions that Francophone typists expect. Cherry MX-compatible cross stems ensure drop-in compatibility with virtually every mechanical switch on the market — Cherry, Gateron, Kailh, Outemu, Akko, JWK, and clones alike.

The keyboard is the pen of the 21st century. The Lexicon ensures yours writes in your native tongue.

Application Scenarios

The Lexicon addresses a genuine gap in the mechanical keyboard aftermarket: comprehensive European-language keycap sets that are not compromises. German software developers who code in English but write documentation, emails, and commit messages in German no longer need to switch between US-layout keycaps and half-baked "International" sets that lack proper Umlaut placement. French content writers, journalists, and academics whose daily workflow demands AZERTY no longer face the choice between OEM-quality PBT with incorrect legends or correct legends on thin ABS. Keyboard enthusiasts building custom boards for family members who type primarily in French or German finally have a gift-quality option that feels as premium as it looks. Mac users — often an afterthought in the keyboard hobby — get proper Command and Option legends alongside the Windows equivalents, making the Lexicon one of the few sets that genuinely supports mixed-OS households. For anyone whose first language is not US English, this is the keycap set that treats your language as a first-class citizen, not a secondary afterthought.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will these keycaps fit my keyboard?

A: If your keyboard uses Cherry MX-style switches (the cross-shaped '+' stem), the caps will fit. This covers virtually all mechanical keyboards from brands like Ducky, Keychron, Varmilo, Leopold, Glorious, Drop, and custom builds. Check that your keyboard uses standard key sizes — very compact boards with unusual 1.25U bottom rows may require layout checking.

Q: Are the German and French legends on separate keycaps or the same cap?

A: The set includes dedicated keycaps for each layout — the German QWERTZ caps and French AZERTY caps are separate physical keys. You install the set that matches your preferred layout. The 133-key count includes both language options plus additional modifier and layout-compatibility keys.

Q: How does dye-sublimation compare to double-shot legends?

A: Both are permanent. Double-shot molds two colors of plastic together — legends are physically separate plastic that cannot wear off. Dye-sublimation bonds pigment into the plastic at a molecular level — legends are the plastic itself. Double-shot allows for backlit/shine-through legends (light passes through the legend plastic); dye-sub is opaque and does not support backlighting. For non-backlit use, both are functionally permanent. Dye-sub allows more complex and detailed legend designs, which is why it is preferred for multi-language sets.

Q: Will PBT keycaps sound different from ABS?

A: Yes. PBT produces a deeper, more muted "thock" sound compared to the higher-pitched "clack" of ABS. This is a deliberate acoustic characteristic valued by keyboard enthusiasts. If you are accustomed to ABS keycaps, expect a slightly warmer, less resonant typing sound.

Q: Does this set come with a keycap puller?

A: A basic wire keycap puller is recommended for installation (not included). Plastic ring pullers can scratch keycap sides. A wire puller costs under $10 and is a worthwhile one-time investment for any keyboard owner.

Beautiful set, minor legend alignment on a couple modifiers

The 9009 colorway is gorgeous in person — warmer and more refined than photos suggest. PBT texture is exactly what I wanted: matte, slightly textured, no shine. The German QWERTZ legends are accurate and complete. I noticed very slight misalignment on the right Shift and the stepped Caps Lock legends (maybe 0.3mm), which is the only reason this isn't a perfect 5 stars. For everyday typing, it's invisible. Would absolutely buy again for my office keyboard.

Best keycap purchase I've made for my custom build

French AZERTY layouts are notoriously hard to find in the custom keyboard world, and this set is a revelation. The accented characters (é, è, ê, ç) are perfectly printed and the dye-sub quality rivals sets that cost twice as much. The PBT texture is perfectly matte — no ABS shine after a month of heavy typing. The inclusion of both Mac and Windows modifier legends is a thoughtful touch for someone like me who switches between platforms.

Finally, proper German legends on quality PBT

As a German developer, I've been searching for years for a keycap set that has real QWERTZ legends on thick PBT. This set delivers. The dye-sub is crisp — the Ä, Ö, Ü, and ß legends are perfectly aligned and will never fade. The 9009 colorway is timeless, and the 1.5mm walls produce a deep, satisfying typing sound on my Gateron Black Inks. The 133-key count meant I had exactly the right caps for my 75% layout without compromises.
