Description

Exporting Power Is Not the Same as Being Paid for Power. This is the detail that catches most first-time grid-tie installers, and it has nothing to do with the panels. In a great many service areas the utility meter does not know which direction electricity is flowing. It adds up whatever passes through it. Send surplus solar to the grid and the meter can register it as consumption, which means a system designed to reduce a bill quietly increases one. The limiter exists because that outcome is common, expensive, and entirely avoidable.

This is the Y&H SUN series 2000W grid-tie inverter, and the version supplied here ships with the internal limiter and the sensor clamp plus two metres of cable. The limiter reads the load at the point of supply and holds the inverter output under it, so the panels cover what the property is using and nothing is pushed backwards through the meter. Generation itself is handled by an MPPT stage with 99 per cent tracking efficiency, taking 45 to 90 volts DC from the array and delivering 190 to 260 volts AC on a pure sine wave. Output frequency self-selects between 50 and 60 hertz, power factor exceeds 0.95, and maximum output current is 10 amps. The inverter synchronises and holds phase with the utility supply, so household loads draw from solar first and fall back to the grid only when generation cannot cover them.

The unit measures 540 by 310 by 155 millimetres and weighs 7 kilograms, which is a wall or rack installation rather than a floor-standing one. Protection covers over-current and over-temperature conditions, and the SUN series carries VDE certification with relays fitted to the German specification. The package includes the inverter, an AC cable, the internal limiter clamp with its sensor and two metres of cable, and an English user manual. A WiFi variant is available for remote monitoring, so production can be reviewed without standing in front of the unit with a clipboard.

A solar array without a limiter is an unmetered donation to the distribution network.

Where It Belongs

This inverter belongs on the wall of a house or small commercial property that has panels producing more than the building consumes during the middle of the day, in a service area where the meter does not distinguish import from export. It is also the right part for an installer who has already been asked the limiter question by a customer and would rather answer it with hardware than with an explanation. Rooftop arrays between roughly 1.5kW and 2.5kW are the natural fit for the 2000W model, since the unit is sized to the generation rather than to the peak nameplate. The WiFi variant suits owners who want to see daily production without a separate metering system, and the VDE certification with German-specification relays matters for installations being signed off under European standards. Workshops, small farms and light commercial buildings with steady daytime loads get the most out of the limiter behaviour, because the generation is consumed on site rather than exported.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why does this inverter need a limiter?

Because in many service areas the utility meter cannot tell the direction of power flow. Excess solar sent to the grid can be recorded as consumption, so the customer is billed for electricity they supplied. The limiter reads the household load and caps inverter output beneath it, which prevents the export from being metered.

Q: What solar array configuration does the 2000W model expect?

It takes a 45-90V DC input with peak power tracking across 50-90V and a 49V start-up threshold. That voltage window is what determines your string design, and it should be matched before ordering rather than after the panels are on the roof.

Q: Does it work on both 50Hz and 60Hz supplies?

Yes, output frequency self-selects between 50 and 60 hertz, and the inverter synchronises and holds phase with the utility supply. It draws on solar first and supplements from the grid when generation cannot cover the load.

Q: Is the limiter clamp included or do I need to buy it separately?

It is included. The package contains the inverter, an AC cable, the internal type limiter clamp with its sensor and two metres of cable, and an English user manual. That is the complete set required for a limiter-based installation.

Q: What certification does it carry for European installations?

The SUN series carries VDE certification and the units shipping against the German specification have relays fitted. That matters for grid-connected sign-off under European standards, and it should be confirmed against the local requirement before commissioning.

Q: Can I monitor production remotely?

Yes, if you select the WiFi variant. The 2000W with WiFi model reports production data over the network. The standard model does not include network monitoring and relies on the unit display and any external metering you fit.

Works well, weight needs a solid wall

Seven kilograms on a 540x310mm chassis is fine as long as you are mounting to masonry or a proper rack, I would not hang it on plasterboard. That is a mounting note rather than a fault. Generation has been consistent and the limiter clamp with the 2m cable was all included.

Pure sine wave, no interference on the house wiring

I was cautious about a grid tie inverter at this price causing noise on the circuits, and there has been none. Power factor is above 0.95 and the waveform is clean. Frequency auto-select handled our 50Hz supply without any configuration on my part.

VDE certification made sign-off straightforward

I had the installation inspected under European standards and the VDE certification with German specification relays meant there were no arguments. 45-90V DC input matched our string design and the 99 per cent MPPT tracking shows in the daily production figures.

The limiter is not a gimmick, it saved my bill

Our meter does not distinguish direction, so before this inverter we were being charged for solar we were exporting. The sensor clamp reads the house load and holds the output under it, and the first full month showed the export charge gone. That alone paid for the unit.
