Description
A fat tyre is not a wide tyre with ambitions. It is a different physical argument. At four inches across, the contact patch stops being a line and becomes a surface, and surface area is what lets a bike float over snow, sand and wet gravel instead of cutting into it. Run the pressure low and the tyre conforms to the ground beneath it; run it higher and the same tyre becomes a fast, stable roller for asphalt and hardpack. Nothing else on a bike changes its behaviour so completely for so little money.
The tread is where the decision gets made, and this tyre is offered in two answers. The anti-slip build carries a lugged pattern meant for loose ground, packed snow and mud, where the job is to find grip in material that has none. The half-bald build strips the centre of its lugs to leave a continuous rolling strip, which is what you want on asphalt, boardwalk and hard-packed trail, where a knobbly tyre only buzzes and slows you down. Choose the surface first and the tread follows.
At 1,600 grams per piece it sits where a 26 x 4.0 tyre should: heavy enough to hold a line through a corner at low pressure, not so heavy that climbing becomes a negotiation. The casing is a wire bead clincher, so it mounts on standard 26-inch fat rims with a tube and stays put. Fitment is the one thing to check before ordering, because a 4.0 tyre needs clearance at the chainstays, the fork crown and around the derailleur cage that a 3.0 frame will not give you.
Choose the ground first. The tread is only a consequence of that decision.
Contact Patch and Tread
- ✦26 x 4.0 fat bike sizing, built for frames with true fat clearance at the stays, fork crown and derailleur cage.
- ✦Two tread builds: anti-slip lugged for snow, sand, mud and loose gravel; half-bald semi-slick for asphalt, boardwalk and hardpack.
- ✦1,600 g per piece, which holds a line at low pressure without turning every climb into a negotiation.
- ✦Wire-bead clincher casing that mounts on standard 26-inch fat rims with a tube and stays seated.
- ✦Ride it low for float over soft ground, higher for speed and stability on hard surfaces.
- ✦Sold as a single tyre, so a pair can be matched to the surface you actually ride rather than bought blind.
- ✦A matching 26 x 4.0 tube variant is listed for riders replacing tyre and tube together.
- ✦Branding on the sidewall varies by production batch; the specification does not.

Which Rider This Is For
Two riders, one tyre. The first is on a fat bike in winter, riding packed snow, ice-edge slush and frozen trail, where the anti-slip build and a low-pressure contact patch are the difference between traction and a bruise. The second is on a beach cruiser or a fat-tired commuter running boardwalk, asphalt and hardpack, where the half-bald build rolls quietly and grips without the vibration of lugs. The same casing serves both, which is why the tread choice matters more than the model name. Buy the pair that matches the surface you ride ninety percent of the time, and stop optimising for the ten percent.
Fitment Questions
Q: Will this fit my bike?
Only if your frame has genuine 26-inch fat clearance: roughly four inches of room at the chainstays, the fork crown and around the derailleur cage. A standard 26-inch mountain bike frame will not take a 4.0 tyre, and no amount of deflation fixes that. Measure the gap before ordering.
Q: Which tread should I choose?
Anti-slip for snow, sand, mud and loose gravel, where you need lugs to bite. Half-bald for asphalt, boardwalk and hard-packed trail, where a continuous centre strip rolls faster and quieter. If you ride a mix and can only buy one, anti-slip is the more forgiving choice on the surfaces that punish you.
Q: Does it come as a pair?
One tyre per order. Most riders buy two, and many buy one of each tread for a mixed winter setup. The 26 x 4.0 tube is a separate variant for anyone replacing both at once.
Q: Is it tubeless compatible?
It is supplied as a tube-type clincher and is not rated for tubeless conversion. Fit it with a tube, which is also the simpler repair on a cold trail.
Q: What pressure should I run?
Low, and lower than you think on soft ground, then higher for asphalt and load. Fat tyres are pressure-tuned rather than pressure-filled, so carry a gauge and find the setting that stops the tyre wallowing without letting the rim bottom out.
Q: Why does the sidewall logo look different from the photo?
Because Chaoyang prints different sidewall branding across production batches. The casing, size and tread are unchanged, and the tyre is shipped at random from current stock.
Q: What does it weigh in practice?
1,600 grams per piece as specified. That number is the reason to run it at low pressure on soft ground and higher on hard ground rather than trying to make it feel like a 700-gram tyre it is not.
