Description

The best games were never about the graphics. They were about the twenty minutes you stole on a train platform. The Pocket Ronin is built for exactly that moment: a foldable handheld that slips into a jacket pocket and unfolds into a Linux-powered library of retro titles, ready before the doors close.

Inside sits Anbernic's H700 quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 processor at 1.5 GHz with a dual-core G31 MP2 GPU and 1 GB of RAM, driving a 3.4-inch IPS screen at 720 x 480 with full-lamination glass and complete viewing angles. There is 16 GB of onboard storage, expandable to 512 GB across dual TF slots, and connectivity through dual-band 2.4 and 5 GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2 for wireless controllers and online play. A 3300 mAh battery holds roughly six hours of play and recharges over USB-C.

The folding design is more than a gimmick. The lid carries a Hall magnetic switch, so closing it puts the console to sleep and opening it wakes the game exactly where you stopped. HDMI output turns it into a home console, Hall-effect inputs resist drift, and the supported library spans everything from ported titles to downloadable retro formats.

Progress was never the point. The pocket was.

In the Hand

On a commute it is a distraction that fits in a pocket and wakes instantly when opened. At home, an HDMI cable turns it into a living-room console for two-player sessions. On a long flight, the six-hour battery and expandable 512 GB library cover the distance without a charger. For the collector revisiting a childhood library and the traveller who wants zero setup, it delivers nostalgic play without the nostalgia tax of hunting original hardware.

Player Questions

Q: Does it come with games pre-installed?

A: It is offered in 64 GB and 128 GB game-bundle variants with libraries included; the base unit runs the Linux system and supports third-party game downloads.

Q: How long does the battery last?

A: Around six hours of play on the 3300 mAh battery.

Q: Can I add more storage?

A: Yes, dual TF card slots support expansion up to 512 GB.

Q: Does it connect to a TV?

A: Yes, via Mini HDMI output for big-screen play.

Q: Do the sticks drift over time?

A: The console uses Hall-effect components designed to resist the drift that plagues traditional sticks.

Q: What happens when I close the lid?

A: A built-in Hall switch puts the console to sleep; opening it resumes the game where you left off.

Q: Can it run my own game files?

A: Yes. It supports third-party software and common retro game formats, and the built-in downloader helps organise libraries across the dual TF slots.

Q: Can two players play together?

A: Locally by connecting the HDMI output to a TV, or online through Wi-Fi where the title supports it.

Brilliant indoors, small in direct sun

The screen and controls are great for the price and the Hall sticks have shown no drift in a month of use. In direct sunlight the small panel is hard to read, which is the only caveat. Fits a coat pocket and charges over USB-C.

Six hours of genuine play

Battery matched the claim on a long flight. Dual TF slots meant I brought my whole library and never ran out of space. Bluetooth controller paired straight away and the HDMI out turned it into a proper living-room console that evening.

The folding lid is exactly why I bought it

It lives in my jacket pocket and opens to wake the game right where I stopped, thanks to the magnetic lid switch. The 3.4 inch IPS screen is sharp for its size and the H700 chip runs everything I have thrown at it so far.
