Description

A television stops being a television the day the smart interface inside it becomes slower than the panel behind it.

The screen in most living rooms is fine. The processor bolted to the back of it is not. Four or five years after purchase, the built-in menu takes seconds to respond, an app that used to open instantly now buffers, and the manufacturer has quietly stopped issuing updates. Replacing a perfectly good panel because its software aged is the most expensive way to solve a cheap problem. A set top box does the same job for a fraction of the cost, and it can be replaced again in five years without touching the wall bracket. The only requirement is that the box is fast enough and connected well enough to outlive the interface it replaced.

The V6 Pro is built around an Amlogic S905Y4 quad-core 64-bit processor with a Mali-G31 MP2 graphics core, 4 GB of DDR4 memory and 32 GB of eMMC storage. That is enough headroom for the modern streaming apps to launch without the pause that betrays an underpowered box, and enough storage for the apps themselves plus their caches. Video leaves through HDMI 2.0, the network connection is Gigabit Ethernet rather than the 100 megabit port still fitted to many boxes, and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are both present for households that cannot run a cable. It runs the Android TV environment, so Netflix, Prime Video, YouTube and Google TV are installed through the normal channel rather than side loaded, and the voice remote is included.

Buy the V6 Pro when the goal is stability rather than novelty. It suits a main television that has to be reliable for everyone in the house, a second bedroom set that needs an identical interface to the one downstairs, or a monitor being repurposed for streaming. The Gigabit Ethernet port is the specification worth checking first, because a wired connection removes buffering as a variable and the cost difference between a 100 megabit and a Gigabit port is invisible on the box and enormous during a 4K stream. The Android TV platform keeps the remote and the app layout familiar, and the box can move to a new television whenever the old one goes.

The panel is not the problem, and replacing the whole television was never the answer.

Application Scenarios

The V6 Pro suits three households. The first has a good television with a tired interface and wants the apps to open quickly again without a new panel. The second runs several televisions and wants the same remote layout and the same app positions in every room, which is what a consistent Android TV box delivers. The third is repurposing a monitor or an older screen in a spare room, a workshop or a holiday let, where a cheap box plus a screen already owned is far cheaper than a smart television. In each case the app list is familiar, the voice remote works the way people expect, and the wired network port keeps 4K playback stable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will it make my television 4K?

The box outputs 4K over HDMI 2.0, so the final resolution depends on the panel it is connected to. It will drive a 4K television at full resolution and a 1080p television at its native resolution.

Q: Does it come with the streaming apps installed?

It runs the Android TV platform, so Netflix, Prime Video, YouTube and Google TV are installed through the standard app store with your own accounts.

Q: How much memory does it have?

4 GB of DDR4 memory and 32 GB of storage, which is enough for the major apps and their caches.

Q: Is a remote included?

Yes, a voice remote is included in the box.

Q: Should I use the Ethernet port or Wi-Fi?

Use the Gigabit Ethernet port when a cable is practical. It removes network variance from 4K streaming, which is the most common cause of buffering.

Q: Does it need a subscription?

The box does not. Streaming services are billed by the providers, and the box itself works with your existing accounts.

Good box, use the network cable

Very stable over Ethernet. On Wi-Fi in the back bedroom it occasionally buffered during a 4K stream, which is a network issue rather than the box, and the cable fixed it.

Voice remote the family can use

My parents manage this without help, which was the point. Netflix and YouTube are installed through the normal store and the remote works from across the room.

Fixed the television without replacing it

The panel is fine, the interface was the problem. Apps open immediately now and the picture is stable because I used the Gigabit port rather than wireless. Setup took ten minutes.
