Description

Most computers in the world are not doing anything heroic. They are holding a spreadsheet, a browser with fourteen tabs, a point-of-sale window and a label printer queue. The Small Hours starts from that observation and refuses to overpay for it. This is a mini desktop built around the idea that adequacy, correctly specified, is a form of luxury, because a machine that does exactly what is required and nothing more is a machine that can be bought six times over.

The BMAX B2 Plus carries an Intel Celeron J4115 quad-core processor running from 1.8GHz to a 2.5GHz burst, matched to 8GB of RAM and a 128GB solid-state drive. Intel HD Graphics 400 drives a 4K display output, which is enough for a signage wall, a back-office dashboard or a living room screen. Connectivity is where this unit separates itself from the anonymous grey boxes of its class: Bluetooth 5.0 for keyboards, headsets and barcode scanners, a USB Type-C port for modern peripherals, and a genuine RJ45 ethernet jack for the wired connections that retail and hospitality still depend on.

The listing is organised by destination and plug standard rather than by capability, because the same machine is shipped to Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, the Czech Republic, Russia and Australia. Every configuration is the same computer. What changes is the power adapter in the box and the warehouse it leaves from. Windows 10 arrives pre-installed, so the machine is productive on the first boot rather than after an evening of driver work.

The smallest computers are the ones that ask the least of the room they stand in.

Why This Piece

  • ✦ Quad-core Celeron J4115 — Four cores running 1.8GHz base to 2.5GHz burst for office, retail and media tasks.
  • ✦ 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD — Enough memory for browser-heavy work and a solid-state drive that boots in seconds.
  • ✦ 4K display output — Intel HD Graphics 400 drives a 4K panel for signage, dashboards or home theatre.
  • ✦ Bluetooth 5.0 and Type-C — Modern peripheral support for headsets, barcode scanners and external storage.
  • ✦ Wired ethernet — A genuine RJ45 jack for the stable connection that point-of-sale and hospitality require.
  • ✦ Windows 10 pre-installed — Productive on first boot, with no driver hunt and no licence to source separately.
  • ✦ Region-matched configurations — Plug and destination variants are stocked for the EU, UK, US, Australia, Russia and the Czech Republic.

Where It Belongs

The B2 Plus is at its best where a full desktop is wasteful and a laptop is impractical. Shop counters use it for point-of-sale software and inventory lookups. Small offices deploy it as a terminal for shared drives and booking systems. Hospitality businesses mount it behind a screen in a reception area where nothing should be visible except the display. At home it drives a television as a streaming and media box, or sits on a desk for study, browsing and correspondence. Its 4K output and Bluetooth 5.0 make it equally serviceable as a signage player in a window, running the same loop for months without attention.

Questions, Answered

Q: Is Windows 10 already installed?

A: Yes. The machine ships with Windows 10 installed, so it is usable on the first boot.

Q: How much memory can it take?

A: This configuration ships with 8GB installed, which is the practical ceiling for this platform and sufficient for browser-heavy office work.

Q: Can it run two monitors?

A: It has a single display output. For dual-screen work, a USB graphics adapter or a different model in the range is the correct choice.

Q: Why are there so many variants?

A: Each variant is the same computer with a different power plug and shipping warehouse. Select the one that matches your country to avoid using an adapter.

Q: Is it fast enough for point-of-sale software?

A: Yes. Retail and hospitality point-of-sale applications are well within the capability of a quad-core Celeron with 8GB of memory and a solid-state drive.

Q: Does it have wired networking?

A: It has a genuine RJ45 ethernet port, which is preferable to wireless for point-of-sale terminals and fixed signage installations.

Second one for the other branch

We now have two of these running signage loops in shop windows. They have been on for weeks without a restart. Ordering the correct country variant meant no adapters and no fuss at installation.

Solid office terminal

Bought the EU plug version and it arrived ready to use with Windows already installed. Runs a browser with a dozen tabs and a video call at the same time without slowing down. It is not a gaming machine and does not pretend to be, which is fine for a reception desk.

Exactly what a till needs

Paired it with a barcode scanner over Bluetooth and a receipt printer on USB. Boots in a few seconds, runs the point-of-sale software all day, and the ethernet port means the connection never drops in the middle of a sale. The size is the best part, it disappears behind the screen.
