Description
A Drive Without a Home Is Just a Chip. Anyone who has upgraded a laptop knows the feeling of being left holding a bare M.2 stick, a fast piece of silicon with nowhere to live. The UGREEN enclosure is the aluminium housing that turns that loose module into a pocket SSD, running at twenty gigabits per second over USB 3.2 Gen2x2 on the NVMe side and six gigabits on SATA, in a shell small enough to disappear into a cable pouch.
Inside, a dual-protocol controller reads either module type, so it does not matter whether the drive you pull is NVMe or SATA, or which M key it carries. Four lengths are supported, 2230, 2242, 2260, and 2280, up to eight terabytes, and a thermal pad presses directly against the module so the aluminium at the edges carries heat away instead of letting a long file copy throttle the drive beneath it. A silicone jacket takes the knocks a drive in a bag will get.
It is deliberately tool-light. Take off the silicone cover, unscrew the lid, align the interface, fix the drive with the screw cap, apply the thermal sticker, and close it. No driver install is needed on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, or iOS, and the box ships with both a C-to-C and a C-to-A cable, the second of which is the accessory most enclosures quietly omit. A single LED reports activity, so you know a transfer is moving before you trust it.
Storage you can hold is only useful if it survives the trip. This one does.

What It Carries
This is the enclosure for the technician who pulls a good drive from a dead laptop and refuses to bin it, for the video editor who needs to move a project between machines faster than a network share allows, and for the gamer who keeps a spare NVMe for a rotating library of titles. It also answers the small, practical jobs: rescuing data from a decommissioned machine, cloning a system drive before a rebuild, and carrying a bootable image in a bag. Anywhere a bare M.2 module needs a body and a cable, this is the housing that gives it one.
Builder Questions
Q: Will it reach the full 20Gbps?
A: Only if the port you plug into is USB 3.2 Gen2x2. On a standard USB 3.2 Gen2 or USB 3.0 port the enclosure caps at 10Gbps, which is a limit of the host, not the housing.
Q: Does it take both NVMe and SATA drives?
A: Yes. A dual-protocol controller reads either module type, so the enclosure works with NVMe and SATA M.2 drives alike.
Q: Which drive lengths fit?
A: Four are supported: 2230, 2242, 2260, and 2280. The 2280 length is the most common in desktops and larger laptops.
Q: Do I need to install a driver?
A: No. It is plug and play on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. The drive appears as an external volume once fitted.
Q: How much capacity does it handle?
A: Up to 8TB, which covers every consumer M.2 module currently on the market.
Q: Does it get hot under load?
A: The aluminium body and the included thermal pad are there precisely to move heat away from the module. Fit the thermal sticker during installation and let the shell do its job.
Q: What cables are included?
A: A 33cm C-to-C cable and a C-to-A USB 3.0 cable. Between them they reach a modern USB-C port and an older USB-A port without an adapter.
Q: Is my drive safe in a bag?
A: The silicone jacket absorbs shocks, and there are no moving parts inside. Treat it like any portable SSD and it will cope with daily carry.
Q: How hard is installation?
A: Five steps and no special tools: remove the cover, open the lid, align the interface, fix the drive with the screw cap, apply the thermal sticker, and close it.
