Beschreibung

Every camera bag is a trade between reaching your gear and protecting it. The back-access bag is the only design that refuses the trade.

On a conventional backpack the main compartment opens away from your body, facing the street. That is convenient in a studio and indefensible on a platform, in a market or on any crowded pavement where the bag is behind you. This one inverts the geometry: the harness and the shoulder straps sit on the outside of a padded back panel, and the gear compartment opens against your spine. Setting the bag down to change a lens means the opening faces the ground, not the crowd, and nobody standing behind you can reach the camera without unclipping the bag from your shoulders first.

The shell is a 600 denier water-resistant polyester with crack-resistant reinforcement and a 210D nylon lining, and because water resistance is not water proofing, a rain cover is included rather than sold separately. Inside, the back compartment is sized for a professional DSLR with an 80-200 mm f/2.8 attached, plus two to four spare lenses or a flash and a tripod carried outside. A removable accessory pouch takes cables, chargers, cards and manuals, and the outer pocket keeps the things you need without opening the gear section at all. The internal cavity measures 23 x 13.8 x 40.5 cm and the bag weighs 1.3 kg empty, with a detachable waist belt and an adjustable sternum strap to transfer the load off the shoulders on a long walk.

The gear is expensive, the pavement is crowded, and the zipper faces the wrong way on every other bag.

The Back-Access Argument

  • Back-panel opening — the gear compartment opens against your body, so nothing is exposed to the street behind you
  • 600D water-resistant shell — coated polyester with crack-resistant reinforcement and a 210D nylon lining
  • Rain cover included — full cover for sustained rain rather than hoping a coating holds
  • Pro DSLR load-out — holds a body with an 80-200 mm f/2.8 mounted plus 2-4 lenses or a flash
  • Removable accessory pouch — keeps cables, chargers, cards and manuals organised and can be carried separately
  • Harness with waist belt — detachable belt and adjustable sternum strap move weight onto the hips
  • Tripod carry — external attachment for a tripod without opening the gear compartment

Where It Belongs

The design pays for itself in exactly the situations photographers complain about afterwards: a crowded transit platform, a night market, a festival field, a train carriage where the bag is on your back and strangers are close enough to touch it. It also suits long walks, because the internal frame and waist belt keep a heavy load off the shoulders, and day hikes where the camera is one item among several. When the weather turns, the rain cover goes over the top rather than into a pocket in the car, and the removable pouch can be pulled out and carried on its own when the whole bag is not needed for a short walk.

Before You Commit

Q: Why does back access matter?

A: Because the opening faces away from the street when the bag is on your back. With a front-opening design, anyone standing behind you can reach the gear compartment. Back access makes that impossible without unclipping the bag.

Q: How much gear does it actually hold?

A: A professional DSLR with an 80-200 mm f/2.8 lens mounted, plus two to four spare lenses or a flash, a tripod on the outside, and cables, cards and manuals in the accessory pouch.

Q: Is it waterproof?

A: The shell is water-resistant 600D polyester with a 210D nylon lining, and a rain cover is included for sustained rain. Treat the coating as protection against weather, not against immersion.

Q: Will it fit as carry-on?

A: At 25.8 x 17.4 x 44.5 cm externally it is sized within the length limits most airlines publish for a personal item, but cabin rules vary by carrier and aircraft, so check your specific flight before relying on it.

Q: Is the waist belt comfortable on a long walk?

A: It is detachable and padded, which means the load can move onto the hips on a full day out and come off entirely for a short town walk where you want the bag to sit close to the back.

Q: Can I use it as a normal backpack?

A: Yes. Remove the accessory pouch, and the main compartment becomes an ordinary 20-35 litre pack. The rigid frame and padded harness are what make it carry well when it is loaded.

Padded harness makes the difference

I have used cheaper backpacks that dug in after an hour. The padding and the sternum strap keep it stable when you are walking and reaching for the bag, and the pouch comes out for short trips.

Get the rain cover out early

The shell sheds light rain well. In a proper downpour the cover is what saves you, so pull it over before the bag is soaked rather than after. Nothing inside got wet in two hours of steady rain.

Carried the long lens all day

A pro body with an 80-200 attached plus three primes fitted in the back compartment with room to spare. The waist belt moved the weight onto my hips on a six hour walk and my shoulders were fine at the end.

The zipper faces the right way

On every other bag I own the gear compartment opens against the street. Here it opens against my back, so standing on a platform or in a market nothing is exposed behind me. For city work that alone justifies it.
